What the absolute fuck is it with people trying to drag American tipping culture into Australia? The Sydney Morning Herald published an article about hotel stays -- plainly NOT US-specific -- and includes gems like "It’s customary to leave something for the housekeepers at the end of your stay but the considerate guest will leave a little something each day as the housekeeping staff are often on rotation."Either they're just mindlessly republishing offshore content with no editorial view to the local market, or they're trying to slowly turn Australia into a hybrid model wherein we have one of the highest minimum wages in the world PLUS a tipping culture. Arse to that.https://www.smh.com.au/traveller/reviews-and-advice/don-t-steal-the-remote-s-batteries-the-12-rules-of-staying-in-hotels-20230620-p5dhz8.html#tippingcanfuckrightoff

@louis That's pretty sketchy. Even calling in fonts from google annoys me; this is another level. Especially "content-autofill", given database admin often involves data that one wouldn't want sent anywhere.Viva la command line.

@mjg59 aah, c'mon, Solaris was never open source and OpenSolaris was a thing for a very short time compared to the lifetime of SunOS and Solaris. And illumos lives on!

Dear Lazyweb,What's the current state in free/open source audio editors? I recall Audacity was on the nose for phone-homes and data leaks; what's the go-to now?

This might be the most direct set of comments that boil down to "fuck off with your terrible idea" I've seen on github:https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity/issues/28

@louis The author of open source software isn't obliged to respond to the Washington Post for comment on anything. It isn't "concerning". Not commenting on the record to a potential adversarial press isn't a cause for "concern" at all. Frankly, the only comment I can imagine ever having for the Washington Post is "no comment". Nobody owes the pet newspaper of Bezos so much as the time of day.

@louis The press makes for a fair weather friend in the very best case.A car manufacturer will always be happy to chat to the press when they've announced a new vehicle, but they're not going to respond to the use of their vehicle in a homicide without consultation. The responsible course of action is to stop, consider the facts, obtain appropriate counsel and issue a public statement if that is the advice from counsel.

@mjg59 Because people are likely to just assume the worst from tech companies these days?

Well, that's the build of my meshtastic experimental node ready to go up tomorrow.A few experiments here -- does solvent-welded ABS make for a moderately waterproof enclosure? Will the antenna I picked up over a decade ago for another project idea do the job? Is anyone actually doing anything with meshtastic in the Melbourne area? This is an experimental build, of course: it just needs to last a few weeks to see if something more durable is justified. #meshtastic

The state of IoT (blech) in 2023 is fancy temperature/humidity sensor with wifi or zigbee all seem to suck -- they either don't work, only update infrequently or are tied to a horrid clown service. What does work? The old-fashioned 433Mhz wireless sensors that come with every chintzy "weather station" with an outdoor sensor, including the (cough-cough) "Honeywell" I picked up over fifteen years ago. Some great work done by the rtl_433 project.https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433

I'm creating some new circles of hell, for the following crimes:1. Using flat-blade screws in difficult to reach locations.2. Filling said flat blade screws with paint.

@GossiTheDog I expect NPU cores to turn up in everything soon enough. They're so cheap to implement they're already turning up as stock in five dollar RISC-V chips.
