A thing I've learned about people is they have a strong aversion to awkward silences. You can use this to your advantage. For example if someone says something ridiculous to you, you can just stare at them while maintaining a neutral expression and they will fill in that space with more stuff. Just let them. Keep it awkward. As long as you don't care about making it awkward you have the upper hand. If you have to say anything make it a question like "what motivated you to say that?"

Librarians! I love what you do for the world. And I'm not just saying that because a librarian was able to negotiate my access to a database...I already knew y'all were awesome that's why I asked her for help getting access to the database. Librarians love getting you more information about things.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.-Frank Wilhoit

Teen: can we Google the answer? Me: I wouldn't waste time trying that because there's not an answer. Teen: I'll ask chatGPTMe: do you understand that it's a language model and not a search engine? It doesn't know. Teen 2: it's not intelligent? Me: it's intelligent in the sense that it is able to make sentences, it's not intelligent in the sense that it can answer questions about things accurately. Teacher: wait, it can't? Me: no it can't answer questions reliablyTeen 2: it can't?

Had to advise a friend today and thought I would share again: If you are experiencing a stressful time and that stress is primarily related to the way someone is interacting with you, take contemporaneous notes. If you have a bad neighbor, unethical landlord, manipulative coworker, etc take notes about your interactions. Keep a back up. When you end up in court, or mediation, or HR you're going to be the one with the most evidence.

I'm sincerely asking adults to stop being even a little self deprecating in the planetarium. You do not have a "stupid question" you just have a question. It discourages children from asking things. It's okay to ask questions and you don't need to feel bad about doing it. When you have a chance to ask a question, take a deep breath, and just ask the question. If you're shy you can come up after and ask without the audience. That's also fine. Being curious isn't shameful. It's okay.

My biggest joy is when I'm listening to a person talk about their research and I realize the absolute unfathomable amount of stuff that is known, like we know so much we cannot collect it all in one place. There will always be an infinite amount of new information for me to learn about. That makes me happy.

There's a lot of hopelessness passed around on the Internet lately and you might want to be careful that you don't fall into it. If people really thought everything was hopeless and there was no chance for anything improving, they wouldn't waste energy trying to discourage you. Strategically you don't waste time on unchangeable situations and them trying to drag you out of production is a time consuming endeavor. You can do this, don't let them stop your progress.

Today I explained to an adult that Columbus not only did not "discover" the Americas (a place where people already lived) but he also did not prove the Earth was round (a thing that was figured out hundreds of years before he was born) and that you do not need a boat or a plane to prove the Earth is round, you only need math and observation.

You don't know what you don't know. I don't mean that you just don't know stuff, even though it's true that nobody can know all the stuff. I mean that there's stuff to know about and you don't even know that stuff exists, and that's true of every single person on the planet. Nobody knows they have misconceptions until they encounter someone or something that conflicts with their understanding. It's ok. We're all ok.

Got sent home because there's severe weather on the way, and this guy said "it's not even raining" so I'm here to tell you how to deal with severe weather in the form of storms, high winds, and hail and tornadoes. 1. Try not to be outside or on the road when it's happening. 2. Stay hooked on checking the weather conditions, things change fast. (an NOAA weather radio is a great purchase) 3. Charge up your phones, pack a go bag, get your shoes on and hide when they tell you to. 4. Breathe.

Sometimes I'll type a word and it looks wrong. So I'll look it up and it's not wrong. It still looks wrong. So I look it up again. It's not wrong. I finally figured out it's because of what font it's in. All the hours I spent trying to overcome the challenges of being dyslexic and still get tripped up with my spelling even if I didn't make a mistake. Hate all you want on Comic Sans but it never tried to gaslight me about how I spelled "liaison", just saying.

The moon can appear to wiggle a little over time. Libration (the moon's wiggle) is the apparent movement of the moon because it's not in a perfectly circular orbit. Here's how it looks sped up. Keep an eye on the Tycho Crater for full effect. (The Tycho Crater is the bright one at the "bottom" of the moon that has all the rays of debris stretching from the impact out across the moon)

If you want your kids to learn many things and be very well educated, it will help them immensely if you would stop being mean to them. They are children. They are new here. They have to learn everything from scratch. They are going to mess up something at some point.Ask yourself before you decide to say or do anything: ✨- is this unsafe? ✨- is this illegal? ✨- is this immoral? If it is not any of those things, perhaps you don't need to punish that kid at all.🧵

@lanodan yeah but adults aren't scared someone's going to hit them if they spill their glass of juice. Kids are, and the only reason they are is because adults punish them for making small mistakes. So many adults get emotional when they aren't immediately successful because they have lasting trauma from when they were kids and they got punished for being human beings.

Jupiter has something like 90+ moons. I'm not going to count. When I started astronomy they told me 60. We just keep learning more and more. Anyway, the big 4 can be remembered"I Eat Green Cows" (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto) A lot of the others also have names. I'm just telling you all this so I can show you this gif of some moons orbiting Jupiter.

It's been a while since I posted it and most people haven't seen a portable planetarium so here's mine. I take it to schools, daycares, camps, libraries, nursing homes, county fairs, and anywhere else they'll let me set it up. Astronomy is for everyone, so I go where the people are.Edit: If you want to help me go to the smallest towns in Oklahoma you can contribute here: https://ko-fi.com/okiespace
