@ulrichkelber Richtig so.

I think I'll keep this close to the computer, where I can see it. Just in case.

@fribbledom * task manager: I prefer titles if there's space for them* systray: Yes, tiles are much better* meta instead of Alt to move windows: Yaass! Loved the functionality but it broke so many shortcutsAlso great: charge limit, disk overview/SMART, settings highlighting, and merged shortcut config. Will have to test otherwise. Hope that background services (Akonadi, Nepomuk) are causing issues less often ... those are a pain to fix on the user end.

@fribbledom @aral The "correct" thing would be to provide a name in the GUI which also works on the command line. So if the GUI said "Gnome Control Center", a user would have a pretty decent chance of guessing how to call it from the CLIJust tried to start wineglass from the CLI today: "com.github.aggalex.wineglass"Luckily, fish is still able to auto-complete "winegla<tab>" correctly! I think that's my new favourite shell now.

Things I don't miss about the UK:Stupid announcements in public places, (like the one reminding you to always hold on to the handrail while using stairs, I kid you not!)https://youtu.be/Js25N5iPxJEI was always waiting for an PSA telling people to go to the loo before they get in the car or something like that.

I just blocked someone on Mastodon, for the first time since joining. Some very ugly racist asshole.Felt like giving him a piece of my mind but don't feed trolls and all that. He was very clearly also not looking for discussions of any sort, so good riddance.Still feels sad, though. I can't take delight in this, because blocking someone doesn't change their views.

Very good read on Yuval Noah #Harari, why his books are probably rubbish and how he's mostly just selling the Silicon Valley #surveillancecapitalist point of view as if it was some deep insightful philosophy, without bothering to fact-check:https://www.currentaffairs.org/2022/07/the-dangerous-populist-science-of-yuval-noah-harari(somebody else posted that here, but Fedilab got updated and I can't find the original toot anymore... so thanks to whoever!)

Finally got up and signed the #reclaimyourface petition at https://reclaimyourface.eu/...and kind of scared that there's still only 77k signatures, and loads of countries are barely showing up on the map.Dear fellow humans: People are getting arrested for their views, based on face scans in Russia right now. Do we really want that kind of tool in the hands of EU governments (and their private contractors...)? Have we learned nothing from the previous century's history?

So, apparently you can easily get a Google account without telling Google your phone number if you have either an iPhone or a phone running Android 11:https://www.alphr.com/use-gmail-without-phone-number/... but the web interface definitely does not let me, and on my LineageOS phone (with microG), the option definitely does not exist. Seems like they only allow that if they can already get your stuff in other ways....

In related news: I'm still trying to figure out a privacy-friendly way to have a shared calendar online which can be edited by multiple people.(in my case: for a shared practice space. So everyone can enter when they want to use it, and see when someone else is planning to do so.) -- any ideas? Most CalDAV providers don't seem to offer that without either making it public or everyone requiring a (often paid...) account, including the provider I already pay for :(

I just filed a request to have all my data deleted with some online service. The explanation on their "close account" button does not state not whether they're also going to delete my data. So I had to contact support about it. Felt like a huge act of rebellion.Their response was a preformulated text brick stating that they will delete everything, and I'll get a confirmation when it's done, no problem.Simultaneously relieved but still mystified if the button would have worked.

So, I'm just trying to move my stuff to a new phone, which means exporting all the settings for a lot of apps, so I can import them on the new phone.Needless to say, tje experience varies. #Antennapod asks me for a place and a filename, defaulting to /disk/Backups (whence I imported the settings from, some years ago).#Fedilab, on the other hand, produces a silent (thus easy to overlook) notification that "settings were exported". Great! So now I will spend half an hour searching for them!

So, I'm just trying to get an account on #gitlab.com in order to file a feature request for Inkscape, and they apparently insist on my full name, and on me having to solve some silly riddle through a very tedious interface (I bet bits don't get bored doing that!), .... and after verifyibg my mail address, they insist on giving them my phone number, and solving a second one of those stupid riddles?"for security reasons". Whose security?Look, I kind of get if you're trying to keep bots out but ... I barely know you, you're not getting my phone number. Especially not if the "send me spam and promotions" box was ticked by default (not okay in the EU!)There's of course an alternative to providing a phone number: Giving them a credit card number.Yeah, no
