So hey, I want to launch the GNOME Settings app from the terminal, so I guess I just type settings...Linux Gods: no, you muggle, you type gnome-control-center, of course.#YearOfLinuxOnDesktop #consistency

@aral To be fair it would be pretty stupid if they called the binary "settings". There isn't just one desktop on Linux and if everyone started calling their settings app that, we'd have packages clashing with each other left and right. Also "gnome-control-center" still beats "open -b com.apple.systempreferences" on macOS and... uhm, I'm not even sure if you can do that on Windows 😂

@fribbledom @aral for opening control panel, you type control.exe in terminal. To open Settings app, you simply press Win+I. Another name for Settings app is ImmersiveControlPanel. I don't think there is a normal way of running UWP apps except from Start and Shell:AppsFolder. The other method is doing some PowerShell sorcery. For the latter I think you are better off creating a PowerShell script that takes the name of the app from the user and does its weird stuff.Unless you are running a console app that requires to be run within a terminal, you can leave the stuff of calling apps to Win+Q, although it can be iffy at times but it learns to not repeat it next time.

@aral to be fair, people who don't know what the binaries are called are supposed to just use the app launcher (the gui thing) and there simply typing settings certainly brings up the desktop file you expect

@fribbledom I know, imagine calling the binary for the Settings app, settings. Only an absolute idiot would do that.

@aral @fribbledom as long as you mean "gnome-settings" and not literally "settings" this idea isn't complete nonsense

@brad @aral Yes, that makes sense. Of course, the actual reason for it being called "gnome-control-center" is a tale of history & legacy, as usual.Back in the day, it used to be the Gnome Control Center, after all:

@fribbledom @aral > if you can do that on WindowsWin + R, "control.exe", Enter. You can even omit the ".exe".

@aral @fribbledom well it would the work of the distro to provide a `settings` command which would symlink to the user desktop environment settings app.If KDE and Gnome will never starts to provide `settings` command.

@aral why there should be a "consistency" in the executable file name? That's nonsense. Really.

@aral that would break every thing that calls g-c-c directly but whatever.

@aral Unlike all the other replies here, I actually agree with you. i don't know this app but Im assuming it has a GUI that you normally launch by clicking a Settings icon somewhere? Someone made that icon and linked it to your gnome-control-centre. Then I would propose that it is this person'a responsibility to also create a CLI link with the word Settings. So I guess you could submit that as a suggestion.

@fribbledom @aral The "correct" thing would be to provide a name in the GUI which also works on the command line. So if the GUI said "Gnome Control Center", a user would have a pretty decent chance of guessing how to call it from the CLIJust tried to start wineglass from the CLI today: "com.github.aggalex.wineglass"Luckily, fish is still able to auto-complete "winegla<tab>" correctly! I think that's my new favourite shell now.
