The @matrix is moving away from Patreon. But the interesting part is that they are moving to Donorbox with minimum donation of £5 per month.I personally find this limit unacceptable and even too high. But the question is, would you donate £5 or more to Matrix? Please boost 🔁 for reach**Edit**: it seems it is possible, they just didn't share the link in Patreon announcement.

There are some software that we need to preserve, meaning both keeping them under development and also keep them as community-driven projects.I'll list here the projects I think that should be preserved, and I invite you all to comment the projects you think are essential to be on the list (please provide URL as well)My list for now:• @AntennaPod• @kde applications• Emacs• @neovim • @joplinapp🔂 Boosting is highly appreciated

I am getting a new computer for an elderly and to be able to support it, I'm removing the Windows and want to install a #Linux distro. They have previously used Ubuntu Budgie for about 4 years. Which one of these distros do you suggest for lower maintenance burden in the long run?🔂 Please boost for getting more opinions.

I've seen a slight surge during the past 5 days in number of people who have connected to my #Tor #SnowFlake. Previously in 24 hours my computer was serving 1 to 2 users, but in the past 5 days I don't remember it getting below 15.I'm happy that my computer's idle time have been put into good use.

I just added the consult package to my :emacs: #Emacs config, and for doing that I had to read some manual and do some experiments to understand some of the functions and the dynamics. And this got me thinking and ultimately I rediscovered this fact for the hundred time:Emacs is hard to pick up, and it takes ages to configure, but when it is configured, it feels like the extension of your body. many things come naturally and without even thinking about it. It is quite a powerful ecosystem.

Btw, if anyone is interested to take a look at my #Emacs config, it can be found in the following URL. Any feedback is warmly welcome 🤓 :https://codeberg.org/mehrad/.emacs.d

I've been using Searxng (the @disroot instance) for the past 6 months. Especially during the past few weeks almost always the first n results are Reddit posts, where I expected to get the a company's website or a news website or StackOverflow threads. I'm now more inclined to try @kagihq . I hope they give good results or I have no choice but to switch back to Google (and Bing).Although #SearXNG was the only service I was using from Disroot, for the time being i'll keep my donations active.

@selea As far as I remember, no, I'm using the default settings that the @disroot instance has. I'm not even logged in, so I think I cannot set any fundamental setting that gets applied to all my searches across all my computers and browsers.I'll later take a look and try to compare.About @kagihq, I have not give them a real try. I think some weeks back I created an account to test and then I had a bigger fish to fry. If they have ties with Yandex IJSC, that's a pretty big red-flag for me.

It seems after Java, now it's time to avoid having essential software that are written in Python ! This language is a total mess with all the dependency graphs! Practically unusable!!! Even with using AUR that pulls directly from git and having the latest python, still it is a pain. Python is the new Javascript! No essential or infrastructure software should be written in Python!

I'm hosting a cat and it constantly scratches the door to go to rooms that I don't want it to go in. I was frustrated, and remembered that my cat hates sticky surfaces. So I dissolve some sugar in warm water, put in a spray can, coated a layer on the doors, and used hairdryer to quickly dry them. Guess whose home is now quiet and peaceful again 🤓Sugar is not toxic, is widely available, and will easily be washed away with water. I sometimes surprise myself with such quick and effective fixes.

I'm still slow in writing elisp, but I'm definitely getting better. I'm kinda proud of my progress, and I feel more "brave" to write small functions to do exactly what I want. I think #Emacs hugely benefit from a better onboarding and vanilla theme, but after three years of dealing with it, now it feels like home 🤓

@Zenie I agree with @tusharhero that a wizard can be quite helpful, although I think the UI if the vanilla #Emacs is hideous. The Emacs website has an acceptable design and it actually is somewhat attractive, but upon installation of Emacs, I felt like being smacked in the face. We need some graphical designers imho.I personally tried to make my own config very readable and very beginner-friendly (link below) with README and help and comments and pictures and etc.:https://codeberg.org/mehrad/.emacs.d

@tusharheroOpinions are of course different ;) but one of the parts that really is an eyesore for me is the vanilla logo. Attached is the comparison of what I personally like[1] and the vanilla Emacs[2].Btw, considering that you like the design of vanilla Emacs, you might find this thread interesting 🤓 :https://web.archive.org/web/20110726005535/http://www.ee.ryerson.ca:8080/~elf/emacs/logo/index.html[1] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:EmacsIcon.svg[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emacs-logo.svg@Zenie #Emacs #EmacsLogo

I managed to find an easy solution to have reproducible environment using #Guix time-machine while still coding at the comfort of my own IDE.I wrote a very short blog post about how to set it up in about 5 minutes along with example codes for R and etc.:https://mehrad.ai/posts/20251106-reproducible-r-enviroment-using-guix/This can be used for virtually any programming language and software stack.#ReproducibleResearch #BlogPost #RStats

@defuneste This article is to have Guix as external package manager on your own distro. You don't need to switch away from Ubuntu at all. All you need is to install Guix (explained in the article how to), and direnv. and if you didn't like the experience, just uninstall Guix, direnv, and remove the /gnu/store and your computer is back to what it was. This process does not change anything in your OS.I myself use Arch and have Guix on top of it. 🤓

this is hilarious. #CloudFlare is down again. This time error 500. The more amusing thing is that the downdetector.com is working perfectly for cloudflare, because when CloudFlare is down, #DownDetector goes down with it 😂

I stumbled upon this nice website by @blinry and Sándor Fekete:https://idea-instructions.comGive it a shot and enjoy the brilliance of their work. I particularly like this one that I attached here:https://idea-instructions.com/public-key/I hope they do some sketches for some statistical methods too.

Just in 48 hours, 12'000 protestors were killed. This means on average 4.16 people *per minute* lost their lives.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/iran-protest-death-toll-over-12000-feared-higher-video-bodies-at-morgue/This 2 days death toll is way more than the maximum death in *a month* in Gaza:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Gaza_war#/media/File%3AGaza_war_deaths_by_month.pngSo I really don't understand the narrative of these people who were ripping their ass off for Gaza, but are now keeping their mouth shut. Hippocracy at its finest. #Iran #IranRevolution

Did you know that on #Forgejo, you can just have the PRs show up as branches? This is a very short and yet very clean blog post by @tusharhero about it:https://tusharhero.codeberg.page/prs-as-branches.html
