@llewelly @futurebird Ok so picture this, there is pizza day, but your parents only let you bring a sack lunch.(I actually didn’t like pizza, but it was sad for kids who did like pizza and had to eat a sack lunch…I just realized this is probably why me and my misfit of sack lunch eating friends tended to eat anywhere other than the cafeteria)

@futurebird @llewelly My older sister was a pain in the butt, at one point maybe when she was in 2nd grade she pitched a fit about what my mom made. Mom said fine 2nd graders make their own lunches. When I hit second grade that meant me too.I ate peanut butter and butter sandwiches every day probably until 6th grade. We also got a gross red delicious apple, and two chocolate cookies, which my sister was in charge of making, and I did get a milk card.

@futurebird @corbden @llewelly We had metal boxes until they became uncool and then it was a paper bag.I think I had to make the bag last all week, because I definitely remember have a ratty torn up bag.

@jgordon @futurebird @llewelly Yeah neither her nor my mom are reliable witnesses when recalling which of them caused what family drama.I’m sure there was an incident probably standard stubborn kid stuff, mom over reacted, sis over reacted and as a consequence my brother and I are making the only sandwiches 2nd graders can make somewhat reliably.Although it is something of an art to get peanut butter on bread without tearing the bread, as I recall.

@jgordon @futurebird @llewelly And why was it peanut butter and butter? Could we not afford jelly? Was jelly too high in sugar? We must have gone through so much butter because we all totally slathered it on.Oh shoot it wasn’t butter, it was margarine. Was that cheap in the 80s?

@futurebird @jgordon @llewelly The goal was to make the ‘butter’ layer the same thickness as the peanut butter layer, so probably at least two tbps of both.I was rail thin as a kid so it couldn’t have been too terrible of a diet.

@Wyatt_H_Knott @llewelly @futurebird Yeah I don’t get the Mac reference, but I do know the apple indent in a sandwich.I did eventually graduate to ham sandwiches and an apple dent in a ham sandwich was quite the tragedy, all crushed lettuce and slimy mayo bread.

@ned @futurebird @llewelly I think they allow sunflower butter. Plus im pretty sure making a 2nd grader make their own lunch is a no no these days.Cookies are probably also banned.

@futurebird Thanks this is really helpful. We teach a graduate class on quantitative cell biology based in python. Many ppl don’t have prior coding experience, we probably need a section like this.

@futurebird That seems odd that they are getting mad at you for not blaming a third person.I wonder if maybe you are complaining and centering it on some failure about you or the general world when the problem is the third person.Maybe they don’t like the complaining and know it can be solved if you focused on the real problem.he

@futurebird I have a recurring tiff like that with my husband over a shared colleague. It’s not that he wants to bond with me over complaining about her, he wants me to stop complaining about the problems she causes (eg putting too much of her work on me)

@futurebird This is why I wonder if that’s what is going on with your coworkers because the reaction you describe is so similar.

@futurebird I complain about having to teach two different classes in a semester(most of our colleagues teach 2-4 lectures a year) but I tech 4 lectures in two different classes in the same semester often on the same week. The issue is my colleague needs to find someone else to tech other than me in the course she runs. So my complaint about damn I’m teaching too much should really in his mind be a plan to get colleagues to find another instructor.

@futurebird Life happens. You might have the perfect partner and then suddenly they are gone.Happened to my grandmother. Three kids, has just quit her job and sold the house in Seattle to buy a farm, she was no farmer grandpa was. Then bammo he nearly dies from an infection and she had to scramble to unsell the house reclaim her job and support the family for a couple of years while he recovers. He later died at 65 she lived to 101, her own pension kept her comfortable until death.
