"Science is a process, which most people, including politicians — AND SOME SCIENTISTS — do not understand.” (emphasis mine).Color me unsurprised ...Let's put this statement in different contexts:"Journalism is a process, which most people, including politicians -- and some journalists -- do not understand.""Economics is a process, which most people, including politicians -- and some economists -- do not understand.""Business is a process, which most people, including politicians -- and some business people -- do not understand.""Education is a process, which most people, including politicians -- and some educators -- do not understand."This is a power problem. The elite like to surround themselves with other elite. Thus, they recruit from elite institutions to fill position of power. But those elite institutions are heavily populated with legacy admissions. They aren't really elite. They are privileged, and their expertise lies in just that, privilege. Meritocracy? 🤣 Yeah, right. It's a euphemism for kleptocracy.#news #elite #truth #covid https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03706-y

#feditips For the recent wave of newcomers --Unlike #boerchan, there is no algorithm here that assigns value to hitting the ⭐ "favorite." Its only function is to save it to your favorites tab for later viewing. Which, if you really really like somebody's post and want to save it for later viewing, cool. But if the intention is to promote the toot for others to see, you gotta whack that boost icon.

Outsourcing public functions to private enterprise amounts to governance by lowest bidder. Any questions?

How many sloppy logical fallacies can you spot?Cass Sunstein: Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric.#IvyLeague #bullshit https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/20/opinion/cass-sunstein-why-liberal.html?unlocked_article_code=1.AU0.rPqr.aeFXcCNSncXS&smid=url-share

Here's one:"In ways large and small, antiliberalism is on the march. So is tyranny."Antiliberalism = tyranny. Got it, Cass. More rhetoric.

Here's one, right out of the gates:"More than at any other time since World War II, liberalism is under siege. On the left, some people insist that liberalism is exhausted and dying and unable to handle the problems posed by entrenched inequalities, corporate power and environmental degradation."Ok genius, show us why we're wrong? What's that? You'd rather just move on and leave readers to think your cushy little grift is "under siege" from the left without telling us why? Right: that's rhetoric.

Here's one:"Many of the marchers misdescribe liberalism; they offer a caricature."Motherfucker, you just dropped three caricatures before you even stepped into the meat of your argument 🤣 I'm dying over here.

Here's one:"Fascists reject liberalism. So do populists who think that freedom is overrated."Perrrrrrfect. Lets' just equate fascists and populists. Again, without defining terms or explanation. Verdict? Yeah, that's rhetoric.

In response to Cass Sunstein and @freepeoplesfreepress What we experience today is not "liberalism" in the classic sense whatsoever. Should we actually still practice the liberalism of the Roosevelt era, I highly doubt there would be much in the way opposition to liberalism in the U.S. What we practice today is #NEOLIBERALISM. Or, liberalism completely dominated by "finance capitalism" as described in the link I post below by #MichaelHudson & #SteveKeen. Evidence of this fact is the utter disappearance in the U.S. of industrial capitalism & industrial policy -- again spoken of in depth below. The critique of "liberals" by the left is truly a critique of neoliberalism -- government by corporate financiers and rent seekers -- wedded to the neoliberal political strategy of using identity politics to undermine class cohesion. The Clintons really got the Democrats rolling down this road. Obama doubled down on it -- see the wall street bailout, yo. Biden is just another clone with some frilly left topping to make it look like he's different because people are catching on.Then, ask yourself where "liberals" get the majority of their campaign contributions? Huh? Yup ... you guessed it: Wall Street. So, please Mr. *master of rhetoric* Sunstein ... spare me the crocodile tears about the left laying "siege" to liberalism. We're not. We're laying siege to the neoliberalism that you, and your ilk benefit from at the expense of the people -- an analysis Sunstein OH SO CONVENIENTLY forgets to include in his "high minded" rhetoric filled screed.#news #socialism #liberal #politicshttps://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/11/how-finance-capitalism-ruined-the-world-dr-michael-hudson-dr-steve-keen.html

Don't even get me started on how tickled I am that the same people who want to police the uterus are the ones who fail to benefit from the fruits thereof. Oh, irony. How delicious thou art. https://www.salon.com/2023/11/28/its-a-good-thing-women-wont-date/

We criminalize #sexual #prostitution. But all #advertising is, at root, *sexualized* #corporate prostitution. Bottling up the urge to #procreate just better allows the elite to bottle the urge to procreate.A #consumer, at the end of the day, is little more than the #commercial expression of repressed sexual drive.

A little whiny lawyer thread:Just wrapped a 5 day civil jury trial. Mentally and emotionally wiped ... but my brain is still running on adrenaline and keeps asking this question:Why in the hell do courts act out the performative bullshit of swearing people in?You know, the whole "raise your right hand and swear an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth under penalty of perjury in the state of hocus pocus"?People just tell lies, whole lies, and nothing but lies. Swear to god, I impeached three different opposing party witnesses ten ways to Sunday over the course of the week. Straight up played video from their depositions demonstrating the saying shit completely opposite what they testified to in court. There's no penalty. There's no perjury. There is no accountability. How do we expect to have a functioning society without any accountability for lies? I mean sure, they may lose and take a money judgment slap. But, that only encourages them to lie even harder ... or better the next time.Fuck, me. I hate liars./1#lawfedi

Imagine this scenario for a moment and consider the impact upon our legal system:1. Opposing party is testifying. 2. Lawyer shoves document in his face and says "Isn't it true you said precisely the opposite under oath at deposition?3. Court goes so silent you can hear a pin drop.4. Judge says: Bailiff?5. Bailiff ask opposing party to step out of the witness stand, cuffs him, and leads him out of the court room to be taken into custody by the sheriff.6. Trial is recessed until opposing party either bonds out, to be tried criminally at a later date, or sits in jail until his criminal trial. 7. Upon release, trial resumes and the lying sack of shit takes the witness stand again only to be asked the same question. 8. Or, trial isn't recessed and all inferences are taken against the lying sack of shit and they lose the trial AND are prosecuted criminally. Should this be the case, we might actually have a functioning justice system./end#lawfedi

Just looked the perjury laws up ion my state. They're all there. But I look at the caselaw and there is nothing. Here's §12 in my state: -- Defendant’s testimony may be used to prove perjury. --"The various sections of this code which declare that evidence obtained upon the examination of a person as a witness cannot be received against him in any criminal proceeding, do not forbid such evidence being proved against such person upon any proceedings founded upon a charge of perjury committed in such examination."Not even mentioning the legislature was must have been smoking crack when they wrote it, there is not a single actual case where the statute has been employed. Wtf?/2#lawfedi

The social contract in an "adversarial" political system divides the world along two lines --- winners, and losers. You don't get to choose whether to endlessly struggle and compete against your brothers and sisters in adversity. You only get to choose how hard you'll struggle to make their lives shittier than yours. What a system. /1

The U.S. isn't a democracy. It isn't a republic. It's an adversarial system based on the flawed social darwinian concept that when we are forced to compete society improves. Sounds like our founding fathers had watched too much Beyond Thunderdome.
