@mergerson @opal The idea of federated systems where each instance sets its own rules and decides how it will treat minority members is drawing uncomfortable connections to the US’s experiment with federated states. I’ve been really enjoying my time here so far and appreciate the degree to which it will be hard for centralized corporate power to control and monetize it, but centralization can also have benefits.

@tzimmer_history The “unity” line is how the Confederates won the peace after losing the war. Johnson was Lincoln’s VP in the interest of unity, the Compromise of 1877 that ended Reconstruction prematurely and ushered in Jim Crow was made in the interest of unity, the narrative of the Lost Cause was given mainstream academic acceptance in the interest of unity, military bases were named after Confederate generals in the interest of unity.

@tzimmer_history Unity saw ex-Confederates pardoned, returned to positions of economic and political power, and their reputations restored for posterity for a temporary, uneasy peace that only ever included white America, and is now breaking down.

@lowqualityfacts I am not a tech person or very computer savvy at all but I have had no problem navigating Mastodon and even managed an instance change.

@tzimmer_history So I pulled up the National Review article and pretty early on we’re encountering some red flags. “If you are able to read it and conclude that the single reference to slaves developing skills (which I’ve bolded) is indicative of the narrative direction of the course, rather than a tiny (and correct) part of it, then you are beyond saving and you deserve to live your life as an ignoramus.”

@tzimmer_history I just want to emphasize that nobody is debating that the part of the curriculum Harris takes issue with is in there when they call her a liar, they just think that it is *correct.*

@MarkBrigham @tzimmer_history The thrust of the article seems to be to put words in Harris’ mouth, and cast her statement as saying that Florida was teaching that slavery was a *net* benefit for the enslaved, which is not what she said. We shouldn’t be teaching the pros and cons of slavery, even if on net we teach more cons.

@stux Also the inflation was mostly caused by Trump policies. He pursued expansionary fiscal and monetary policy during a strong economy, ignoring warnings that this would limit our ability to deal with a crisis, and stripped resources away from pandemic prevention. It took some time, but Biden was able to tame the inflation that Trump caused, and now the US is doing significantly better than the rest of the world.

@futurebird Everyone who referred to who the nominee would be as uncertain when they made a statement about Biden dropping out. This includes but is not limited to Obama and Pelosi. Many (but not all!) saw the massive fundraising push, folded, and endorsed Harris. Pelosi folded within 24 hours, Obama to my knowledge has not. We’re really looking at that first statement in the hour or two after the news broke, and who immediately backed Harris and who didn’t.

@futurebird At this stage I don’t think voters are the audience for these endorsements, it’s more about the delegates and potential challengers. All the big names endorsing right away dissuades challengers from jumping in and gives the delegates their marching orders. A contested convention should be avoided at all costs.

@futurebird For most people, love makes a family, and being present in a person’s life and guiding them as they grow into an adult is parenting, whether you are a biological parent, an adoptive parent, a step parent, or a grandparent, family member, or other person in their life who cares enough to assume a parental role. For these freaks, the only thing that matters is DNA.

@futurebird I feel like Wikipedia is a good place to start here. Obviously it doesn’t have the type of knowledge you are looking for, but I think the basic model is promising.
