What is the point of having a lot of kids if you don't even know who they are? Like isn't that the whole point of having a kid? You get to be a huge part of this person't life and find out who they are?

@futurebird For most people, love makes a family, and being present in a person’s life and guiding them as they grow into an adult is parenting, whether you are a biological parent, an adoptive parent, a step parent, or a grandparent, family member, or other person in their life who cares enough to assume a parental role. For these freaks, the only thing that matters is DNA.

@futurebirdThat’s a very tough question, “the point” of having kidsSometimes with the best intentions and hard work at creating the parent-child relationship, you don’t get it. And it’s not always anyone’s fault. (See my parents for an example)You can always love and support kids, however, no matter the closeness of the relationship. And god bless my parentsParents nurture new humans, one way or another. I think that’s the only thing we all have in common

@peterbutler There isn't any guarantee that you'll like the person... but still just knowing who they are always seemed like the main appeal. And maybe feeling like you did a good job now and then.

@futurebird I think for malignant narcissists it may be a trophy thing. Like having a trophy wife. You know, show off the supposed virility or whatever. I guess kind of an ape behavioral thing?

@futurebird that's only for parents who think children are whole people.

@futurebird Reminds me of the (probably apocryphal) story about Rev Baring-Gould who when asking “And whose little girl are you?” Got the tearful reply “Yours, Daddy.” He had 15 children!
