We have just defederated from an instance running a "blockbot" which was being used to name, and hence draw further harassment to, any fedizen who blocked any user of that instance.I'd like to invite reports of other such bots, should our members discover them. I can think of a few ways that's a violation of our rules and just basic ethical behaviour in general.

You know what's making my day already? The Lip Sync Battle vid I shared yesterday, which is essentially a DRAG PERFORMANCE by Tom Holland, is getting nothing but positive, cheerful responses here, and on Spoutible too.And lots of those are from folk who look to be midlife white men. My dudes, (I say lovingly!) thank you for speaking your appreciation.I find the performance all of silly, HELLA TALENTED, totally sexy-in-a-positive-fun-way and love how that seems to transcend other stereotypes.

@feld @JordiGH am aware of the regionalisms of that slang also!And that our non-English-native developer was somewhat duped into using it as a neophyte dev working on what was then a niche passion project. And that it's being changed in the software.Not sure I'd extend the same grace to a VC-backed Dorsey project where everyone involved is likely fluent in North American English dialects, even if "skeet" in the AAVE sense isn't something white dudebros would immediately think of.

I wish people would stop using terms like "war room" and "arms race" in realms like technology advancement and social structures like organizations and government/politics.We need "strategy tables" and "community forums" and "collaboration interfaces".The words have meaning and shape the interactions. The message, in its connotations, corrupts the medium.

@ramin_hal9001 @feld I recognize this. Also gotta pick the small battles at times and start shifting the ethic in those ways.Unions, co-ops, labour-favouring market conditions can all be leveraged. As can "more ethical leaning capital" choices, like baking in a lower shareholder return that comes AFTER something like carbon offsetting.My current tear is about language. My team should not see our customers as "the other side" from a "war room". We're all trying to keep hospitals running, FFS.

Moderator #feditips for today - this is one I repeat occasionally.You are able to Hide Boosts from those you follow so they don't show in your Home timeline.This is useful when you have an interesting follow whose posts you enjoy, but you're not necessarily on the same wavelength with their other interests.Open their profile, click on the Menu (three vertical dots) and select Hide Boosts.This can be particularly useful during sports playoffs and political campaigns! đ

I boost things for two main reasons. One, it's something really interesting or engaging (admittedly, sometimes because it's negative/enraging) that I want to share with like-minded followers. Two, it's a newer or smaller, or friendly account that could stand to build some engagement.Sometimes the volume from a community admin doing this can get annoying. Please apply the Hide Boosts switch liberally!

I do this for many and I recommend it - absolutely for my own account, too.There are many people I follow because I love their own content and comments, but they boost a lot related to other interests I donât share. This makes the timeline overwhelming.Go to the profile, click the ââŚâ and select âHide Boostsâ.IMHO this is the most useful self-regulation tool we have.

Hmmm ⌠this blog post is giving me the thinks about my recent layoff, and why I, literally the most senior person, and only woman on a tech team, was the preferred cost-saving layoff.https://www.juliaferraioli.com/blog/2023/influential-articles-jul/I did do a lot of âglueâ stuff. Comms between teams. Hunting down expertise across groups. Spending an extra tech support hour with a particular customer aiming to decrease their need for that next call. Glad itâs also got some thoughts about what to do for those of us who LIKE glueing.

@strypey There are a couple things about the production on Dark Matter that leave me not as enthused about PJ's new wunderkind producer as others are .. but in terms of the songwriting and musicality, yes, my gourds, EV's writing is still masterful and Wreckage is an amazing example of the band's synergy. I have some sort of synaesthesia experience listening to it, I can feel the song on my skin or something, it's really powerful.
