@hutchins the problem with all the forks are that they are downstream. Not much good if and when Firefox dies.

It was almost certainly a mistake to watch Threads[0] this week because what I saw today felt a lot like the first act of that movie.[0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads_(1984_film)

It's going to be over a week until we talk about the Firefox ToS thing on LNL but my initial reaction is that this isn't some evil plan, it's just a colossal PR gaffe that will probably be sorted out by the time we record.I'm not defending Mozilla leadership here, they are fucking clueless. But let's not start making up conspiracy theories when the reality is far simpler - they are just out of touch with all their boards and middle management bullshit. Most people working on Firefox mean well

There are many reasons why I've managed to get into the absurd situation where I get paid to talk to my friends about computers, but one of the most important ones (I think) is that I take the time to listen back to every episode before it is published. This adds time to the process, but it's worth it for so many reasons. If you make a podcast and can't be bothered to listen to it, why on earth would you expect anyone else to listen to it?

When people cancel their Patreon subscription it gives them an option to explain why. Sometimes people use it to apologise and explain that they can't afford it anymore. It's nice to know that we haven't pissed them off or something but I feel bad that people are apologising. Our shows are free to everyone, and paid for by people who can afford to support us. Don't tell the Americans but it's basically socialism. No one should feel obliged to pay if they aren't in a position to do so.1/2

2/2But seriously, thank you to everyone who is in a position to support us and chooses to do it. You make it possible for us to make the shows and for everyone else to enjoy them. Also just listening via the free feeds supports us, and spreading the word about our shows is one of the best ways you can ensure we keep getting away with this nonsense at @LateNightLinux.♥️

Actually, a quick 3/2 🙃A lot of creators offer exclusive content to people who are willing to pay but that's not something I have ever wanted to do. It might not be possible for ever (never say never etc) but I'm a firm believer in things being free at the point of delivery. Whether that's something important like healthcare, or something silly like podcasts about computers.Accessible to all, paid for by those who can.The compromise is offering episodes early and ad-free.

I used to be strongly against the use of the SponsorBlock plugin because I thought it wasn't really nice to block baked in host-read ads. But seeing how sneakily YouTube people transition from their content into the ads, I think I'm changing my mind about it.And when I try to skip past an ad, listen for a couple of seconds, and it's not clear to me whether I'm still listening to an ad or not, I feel like never watching that person's videos or listening to their podcasts again.

Just start the ad with a pause and then "OK..." and then make it really obvious that you're reading the script. It's not that hard. 😂

In all seriousness, I get that advertisers want you to sneak your way into ads and blur the lines between content and advertising. I also get that not everyone is childless and has a solid previous career to go back to if things go south like me. 🤷♂️

I know some educators follow me and I have a question for you: what are you doing about the use of LLMs for essays and assignments? In a world of "plagiarism checkers" and "humanizers", presumably it's very hard to prove that students haven't done the work that they are handing in. It must be fairly obvious though. Are there moves to change how students are assessed? Or have you all just given up? Have you started using LLMs to read and mark the "work" that students claim to have done?
