When people cancel their Patreon subscription it gives them an option to explain why. Sometimes people use it to apologise and explain that they can't afford it anymore. It's nice to know that we haven't pissed them off or something but I feel bad that people are apologising. Our shows are free to everyone, and paid for by people who can afford to support us. Don't tell the Americans but it's basically socialism. No one should feel obliged to pay if they aren't in a position to do so.1/2

@JoeRess "Don't tell the Americans, but it's basically socialism"--nah, my fellow Americanskis can hear that. And if it makes them uncomfortable, well, they can fix that for themselves by heading on over to the Patreon, subbing, and proudly declaring that they have purchased a thing on the free market! MURKA! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

2/2But seriously, thank you to everyone who is in a position to support us and chooses to do it. You make it possible for us to make the shows and for everyone else to enjoy them. Also just listening via the free feeds supports us, and spreading the word about our shows is one of the best ways you can ensure we keep getting away with this nonsense at @LateNightLinux.♥️

Actually, a quick 3/2 🙃A lot of creators offer exclusive content to people who are willing to pay but that's not something I have ever wanted to do. It might not be possible for ever (never say never etc) but I'm a firm believer in things being free at the point of delivery. Whether that's something important like healthcare, or something silly like podcasts about computers.Accessible to all, paid for by those who can.The compromise is offering episodes early and ad-free.

@jimsalter @JoeRess Why can't so many Americans tell the difference between "socialism" and "helping others out"? Signed, a conservative American who regrets what has happened to conservative America.

@inaction_figure @JoeRess a large part of it is Civics education going by the wayside. I'm old enough to know what a "civics" class once was, though not quite old enough to have had one myself. Most of the topics of a Civics class were at least *covered* in American History classes fairly well, though. That was the eighties. By the nineties, a lot of the content of the civics classes of old seemed to have disappeared as well, judging from the textbooks of younger friends. THESE days... (1/2)

@inaction_figure @JoeRess by the late 2010s when my own children were in school, they were getting handed bullshit like "southerners brought Africans into America to help with chores."Yes, really. No, my kids were not attending some weird religious private school. If we stop educating kids about how the government works and what rights they have and how and why those rights are secured, we eventually get the shit we see today. And, well. We pretty much stopped, decades ago.

@jimsalter @JoeRess FWIW, I think you and I are in the same "age bracket".Yeah, I didn't have "Civics", but we had "Social Studies". Frankly, I didn't learn enough about my country. Only some of that is due to me not paying attention during classes. But a LOT of the unfortunate things going on are being done by people AT LEAST our age, and "ought to know better".

@jimsalter @JoeRess I've been hoping that Hanlon's Razor would apply, but they keep wrecking the curve.

@inaction_figure @JoeRess we are INCREDIBLY far beyond any point where Hanlon's Razor could be honestly speculated about the MAGA crowd. And to be fair, Hanlon's Razor advised you to expect incompetence rather than malice. It never said that malice couldn't be incompetent as well, and holy shit, have you looked at DC lately...? Whew. I'd have difficulty summing all that up with *only* two words in any better way than "malicious incompetence." (Or, if you prefer, incompetent malice.)

@jimsalter @JoeRess I'm afraid you're right. It's hard to say where one ends and the other begins. I looked up Hanlon's Razor on Wikipedia to check its name, and its entry includes this variation from H. G. Wells:> There is very little deliberate wickedness in the world. The stupidity of our selfishness gives much the same results indeed, but in the ethical laboratory it shows a different nature."The stupidity of our selfishness" applies, but I'm not discounting "deliberate wickedness".
