@lowqualityfacts Translation:"There is no way for us to pay to force up our followers and visibility, and being late to the party means that we have to actively compete with better and smaller news sources and aggregators, which is all totally unfair when we have all the money."

@stux Wow, that's some impressive footwork! Some of the manuals were a bit shaky, but given it's been about 18 years since I so much as tried one I can't really say much. The rail-to-rail bit right off the bat, and the primo and the axel at the end... lots of awesome stuff :)

@lowqualityfacts There is no photographic evidence to disprove this, and plenty of anecdotal yaoi to give it credence.1200 years from now the history books will be forgotten, but the squid people will still be able to find ancient torrents of the yaoi hosted on a server somewhere in Tibet.

Y'know, I like Mastodon a lot. There's a lot of great artists here, and great political thinkers, and a lot of folks who make me think hard about issues like racism, antisemitism, and the economy -- things I already spent a lot of time worrying about, but my worries are better educated now.But sometimes it just gets a bit much.Is it bad that some days I look at my Masto feed and just wish I could turn all the politics off and only deal with the cute animal pics?Today's one of those days.

150 years ago if you didn't like the politics of an area you really could, for the most part, Just Move.Don't like your state? Head west my son/lass!Don't like your country? Borders are big and empty, cross 'em!That doesn't work nowadays. People aren't so much people any more as sets of data, and for us to be able to keep our lives - ties to society - we have to keep access to, updating, that data. There are no frontiers to flee to. No open spaces. No running. Only pushing for change. /1

And I think that's something a lot of folks don't realize."Oh, just flee the red states!"How? To where? With what means? Fleeing requires money to start and money when you arrive. An American refugee in their own country has no help.'Flee the country!"How? To where? You can't get out of the US without a passport any easier than you can enter another country without one, and travel once again costs money.Refuge costs money. There is no fleeing Capitalism. And thus it must be ended. /2

Dear Fediverse:I'm wanting to reach out to #gaming fans who have personal challenges that make some - or many - games difficult to access for them.Visual acuity issues. Hearing loss. Dyslexia, or missing limbs or anything else.I'm planning an article on accessibility features in video games, and would love to hear stories from people for whom those features aren't merely a convenience, but necessary for them to be able to participate in the hobby.I'd appreciate help reaching out on this.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's responded to this so far, keep up the info! There's some things that I legit hadn't thought of when planning what I wanted to talk about in the article, and more information on how others can affect people in ways that I hadn't considered, so every bit is going to help make this a more useful thing!

@chris @jeffjarvis You have a very different idea of what "ethics" is than I do, or was raised to.Ethical behavior is not about what one person or another proclaims is right: it's about behavior that results in the greatest parity of experience and treatment.Racism is, by its nature, unethical. Same as anti-LGBTQ+ laws are, by their nature, unethical.

@chris @jeffjarvis https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ethicIf you need a definition anyone can double-check.Ethics as a code, in my experience, exists specifically to prevent abuses of power by putting in place a general minimum amount of expected humanity in those who will enforce or create new laws. One can argue that plenty of people live by codes of ethics that justify cruelty. I argue that those codes are not, in themselves, a proper reflection on what ethics are meant to enforce.

@chris @jeffjarvis You're arguing that because something can be twisted or lawyered to justify bullshit it, by its own nature, justifies it, and that is just wrong. It's the same logic that leads to people saying things like "because the government can be corrupted government is by its nature a corrupt thing," which... no? And an impractical assertion to make, one that implies that no rules are better than some form of defined rules in place.A code of ethics is needed for the supreme court.

@chris @jeffjarvis ...The entire point of saying the supreme court needs an ethics standard is to STOP the "rules for thee not for me" mentality. At this point I really don't get WTF your point is.

I know this is going to be an opinion that a lot of people disagree with, but hear me out:If you're going to "game-ify" your service... make it optional.I'm not talking "you can just ignore it" optional. I'm not talking "just don't take it seriously" optional.No. Let me disable it.I want to use DuoLingo and NOT know what my ranking is or who my stuff is being compared to or what my score is? Let me.I want to disable achievements on my Xbox or Steam? Let me.It's not that hard.1/2

2/2I understand why companies do this. They consider the competition inherent in such social comparisons to be beneficial to their "engagement."Sure, okay. Whatever. That doesn't make that competitive or comparative drive in all your users *healthy* though, for either the users themselves, or for your service."Game-ify"-ing things often has the same negative impact as any other "engagement" incentive: it takes something someone should like doing and makes it a job, not a joy.Fudge that.

I don't want much out of life.Food in the fridge.Power.Internet access. The ability to go a week without facing existential dread because a vocal minority of the world population would rather see anyone who doesn't think exactly like them dead rather than just accept that folks can be different and that's okay.Simple stuff.....Also, I'd like to pet an alpaca one day.

@futurebird No lie, I've wanted to make a gaming zine for a while with this concept, more or less. The whole thing would be previews of hardware and games that never existed, walkthroughs for the games, etc.To make it weirder, I thought it would be fun to also include actual reviews and walkthroughs on indie games that got post-life releases on period-appropriate hardware and things like that, so that some games in the zine COULD be found IRL.Seemed like it would be fun, y'know?
