Freenode IRC Migration: A thread. In case you didn't keep up with the latest drama, the "crown prince" of Korea has wrestled control over Freenode IRC from its long time operators, and the call has been given to "Abandon Ship"https://gist.github.com/joepie91/df80d8d36cd9d1bde46ba018af497409Now what. The Freenode staff have set up libera.chat, and most channels are migrating to there. Hackint run by the same people as the CCC isn't a bad place to host a channel either.Either case, if you own/run an IRC channel, its time to scuttle it. DO NOT drop registration of your nick or any channel. It can then be re-registered.Step by step:Step 1: password. If you are not using a strong random string as a password stored in password manager, now is the time. If you re-used that password, now is a good time to change that elsewhere. Yes, you should have done that from the start, but we now is a better time then never.Step 2:set user name flags with nickserv/nickserv set enforce on/nickserv set hidemail on/nickserv set private onPrevent any fuckery of scavengers trying to claim your nick.Step 3:remove access to everyone on the channel/chanserv #CHAN access listand then use/chanserv #CHAN access del to remove access to everyone but yourself, and perhaps a skeleton crew of admins. Do this for EVERY channel you have on freenodeStep 4: lock the channel down/chanserv set #CHAN keeptopic onget channel modes with/mode in the the chan windowthen add "m" to the modes with/chanserv set #CHAN mlock +<modes including m>/chanserv set #CHAN secure onStep 5: Set the topic/chanserv set #CHAN topic "Hi! We've moved to http://libera.chat #CHAN See you there!". Add whatever instructions you need. What this has done:1. Made it harder to impersonate you2. Made your channels read only so that only people with ops and voice can chat.3. Now that that is done, removed all ops and voice except a skeleton crew so no one can actually chat4. Set secure, to prevent people from getting around this5. Instructions of where the chat has moved in the topic. The reason for doing this is to police the stragglers of people just logging in and not caught up on the latest move. Its also to prevent the 4chan types who are being imported from claiming some sort of legitimacy via pseudo-legal fiction as they are known to do by stating the takeover never happened and crown prince was always owned of Freenode, and they always owned the channel.

birdsite: Intellectual Property is TheftIntellectual Property is Theft. There are numerous examples of corporations just stealing from individuals or smaller companies, both in tech and in art with the excuse of "just be glad you are getting some exposure".

Replacement for AudacitySo, what is actually a decent replacement for audacity.Less Mixing, and more just waveform editor on linux, can't be too complicated, and can't be ridiculously plebeian, such as being based on TK.(needs Qt OR GTK)Needs to work on linux, X11, and pulse audio. Pulse audio? If it runs directly on ALSA, it interferes with the system running pulse. Not looking to run jack

Story of TruecryptIf you remember last decade, you probably remember an enigmatic disk encryption utility Truecrypt. Some strange design choices, an eventual Linux port, a wealth of unheard of features and rather paranoid design features, as well as an unusual license that didn't play nice with Free software norms. Its developers remained pseudonymous, something not so unusual back then, and didn't interact much except developing Truecrypt. And then one day the music stopped. A warning noting that the program had flaws, to updated to the latest decrypt only, and migrate data was given that immediately threw off red flags. It was a very obvious sign to do something else with data.Truecrypt was survived by its volume container format TCRYPT. The program was forked into a few other viable projects including the even more paranoid Veracrypt. Entirely Free software implementations such as tcplay sprung up for operating TCRYPT partitions.Eventually, after many years, cryptsetup, the mainstream linux encrypted volume support added support for TCRYPT volumes. Truecrypt might be dead and buried, but its container format, with all its features live on.So why was Truecrypt? As we later came to know, the creator of Truecrypt was unmasked as a mid-level drug trafficker. No better inspiration for writing decent security as if your data is actually at risk. Did the hidden volume actually work? We don't know. But we do know he flipped states witness. We also know after he flipped, as soon as he was released from prison, he updated Truecrypt telling everyone to abandon the project. He might have given up drug dealers, but he didn't sell out the FOSS community.(also now, cannabis is legal)

@stunder I mean, that is what Anonymous said, but everyone who kinda knew what happened knew it was from 4chan, and then later branched out in the other chans when 4chan started clamping down on them (/b/ day)Then there was the /i/ board, for invasions. Anonymous was just a personification of the everyman of n-chan. The "other" person you are talking to.the /i/ board rotated depending on admins and legal trouble. It was back when most non-techies where new on the internet, security for social media sites fucking sucked, there was no 2FA, no one used/had password managers, no backoff/fail2ban on most of these services that got easily password guessed.I guess it fanned out after operation chanology, but at its heart it was nothing more than a collective "hecker named 4 chin" just doing typical 4chan shit, except the nazi shit was "ironic"* back then. But at all stages, there was a leadership clique that very much had names and hung out on IRC or other media.* note the quotes.

How we make positive social mediaThis comes up in conversation on how toxic mainstream social media is. People on here want better. Better means we have standards. In order, the community is protected by, in order of importance1. Free Software/Open Source - Not just "Open Source", but the full 4 software freedoms. If the community goes down hill, anyone with tech skills can take the code and run it on another site. This is the primary defense of communities around Free Software, the "ownership" of code and platform mean nothing, and can easily replicated.2. Community Run. The community is a "For Us By Us" community, with community members running the website. There is no incentive for the admins to do any dirty tricks, and some motivated to respect the community when issues do come up, and they will.3. Code of Conduct/Rule of Law/Procedures for community involvement. Community has ability to set its own standards.Online communities that do not do any of this should be considered hostile.Again, Free Software/Open Source is the most important issue. Its the right/ability to replicate the actual online space, if everything goes to hell.

Grindr selling data to databrokers already in use by religious righthttps://www.theverge.com/2021/7/20/22586161/cell-phone-location-data-grindr-catholic-church-report-data-brokersWhere you, or where you not warned about social media sites collecting information on you, and how advertisers just have a complete intelligence profile on you, that they sell to the highest bidder, and this will have consequences.

@tek Deviant used to do this as the last talk at HOPE on Sunday. Last talk? He didn't want anyone screwing with the elevators at the con. What is interesting is elevators generally run analog computers that unlike your modern digital ones, run directly on 110v AC.What was interesting about Hotel Penn, where HOPE was for 20 years, is that it ran on a mechanical computer with gears on the roof. A marvel onto itself.Of course now, more and more elevators are now controlled with more modern digital off the shelf computers...
