How we make positive social mediaThis comes up in conversation on how toxic mainstream social media is. People on here want better. Better means we have standards. In order, the community is protected by, in order of importance1. Free Software/Open Source - Not just "Open Source", but the full 4 software freedoms. If the community goes down hill, anyone with tech skills can take the code and run it on another site. This is the primary defense of communities around Free Software, the "ownership" of code and platform mean nothing, and can easily replicated.2. Community Run. The community is a "For Us By Us" community, with community members running the website. There is no incentive for the admins to do any dirty tricks, and some motivated to respect the community when issues do come up, and they will.3. Code of Conduct/Rule of Law/Procedures for community involvement. Community has ability to set its own standards.Online communities that do not do any of this should be considered hostile.Again, Free Software/Open Source is the most important issue. Its the right/ability to replicate the actual online space, if everything goes to hell.
