@Teri_Kanefield Lawyers can obfuscate the issues. "There were words saying that some of this money might go for other uses" The long argument about type sizes, etc would then show other people's political fundraising literature. And did Trump himself suppress the study or simply not use it? I see where adding the charge to others might help, but this is far from a slam dunk.

@Teri_Kanefield Does Willis have a regular Grand Jury sitting now on this? Does this kind of Grand Jury have to hear witnesses all over again, or do they work with transcripts, etc? If the latter, over the past 3 weeks they could have been doing what's needful for the indictments, right?

@Teri_Kanefield It strikes me that if the lies told by someone without apparent criminal liability are done to protect or coordinate with someone who does have criminal liability the perjury investigation might end up linking them in other ways to those crimes (conspiracy or something else)

@Teri_Kanefield So today is Ash Wednesday. Will indictments of Trump & his besties drop by Good Friday, or will we have to wait until Pentecost? (I will be extremely disappointed if it's not before Michaelmas)

@Teri_Kanefield This is true. But if you look at the testimony in the Proud Boys trial, these guys decided that "to save our country" they needed to kick off a violent revolution. Their time frame for violent attack sets the context for when these things need to get resolved. (Delaware Chancery Court sets same day response deadlines & gives a week & says to the lawyers "work longer/faster") So these things aren't metaphysically determined.

@Teri_Kanefield This is great! Thurgood Marshall's widow, Cecelia was a member of the church I attended-she was its altar guild. Over 80 carrying heavy laden trays of vessels, etc up steep steps, wearing 3 inch heels!

@Teri_Kanefield They would REALLY like to get the judge to rule that the actual malice threshold had been crossed. What's the chance of that?

@Teri_Kanefield @steveportigal The story does seem to have a lot of Steve d'Antuono's perspective. He's recently retired as head of the FBI Washington Field Office.

@Teri_Kanefield It's the very idea that simple one-time solutions will fix anything/everything and do away with all evil dynamics. One of the evil dynamics imho is the influencers who exploit this widespread fallacy to enhance their prominence, wealth, etc. Alas, that is also a dynamic that throughout time ebbs & flows & interweaves and does not *simply* disappear.

@Teri_Kanefield Too bad the couldn't elevate those storms a bit & dump the precipitation in the high Sierras. A couple dozen feet of snowpack would help the reservoirs a lot.

@Teri_Kanefield Question: what happens with simple, fairly obvious crimes where the defendant has minimal legal representation? (For instance, is the charge going to be assault, aggravated assault, or something else?) They know they're going to be charged & the actions they'll be charged for--do they always know before indictment what the actual charges will be?

My daughter, who has had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this observation about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen:

@ageha @PCOWandre @Moon I @thatguyoverthere I do think that there are ways to enhance or incorporate ChatGPT into a more useful research assistant-parsing queries & directing some to best research databases or something--then coming back to the LLM for what it's good at--however the basic illusions will still be the same, even if it becomes better than Google & Wikipedia combined.

@Teri_Kanefield People fantasize that the law can solve all moral and political questions. It regulates various types of behavior within our polity--keeps the grossest of injustices within that from getting terribly out of control. It does not create "justice" in the moral or spiritual sense that most people are really seeking. That's a bigger challenge in human society.

@grammargirl No real idea, but this reminds me of something my German professor, Sidney Rosenfeld told us. He was enlisted in the U.S. army at the end of WW2 & in the occupation he was assigned to question people in Swabia. His German was fluent, but their dialect puzzled him, particularly their stories were peppered with a particle that sounded "ee". One night he looked at his literal transcriptions & it dawned on him. They were saying "I" (but not "ich" as in "proper" German).

@Teri_Kanefield Trump fires competent counsel & lots of good firms won't deal with him. So if he forces the (good enough) lawyers he has into making stupid defenses, does that qualify?

@freemo @Teri_Kanefield That's surely his strategy, but the problem is that he goes to trial in the Spring. If he succeeds in delay it will be in the Summer. He's still hoping, I guess that he won't have to serve his sentence if he wins. But that's a longshot bet for someone whose fortune is dissolving right now in New York courts.
