@lauren I think there's some displaced frustration going on with regard to this.Leaving aside that as professional wordsmiths knowing that exact means of expression should be of the utmost priority during the tiny window of attention of the lede and headline that is the first thing read and likely main payload conveyed to members of the public:It's not the job of "news" to ceaselessly repeat what people should already have paid attention to. "News." New. It's our job to pay attention.

@stux I don't have the chops to explore it formally, but one wonders if the logic of blocking instances might lead to an all-island situation, no network, axiomatically. If people become sufficiently discerning, to employ an anodyne term. Granting there are borders beyond which we'd find broad agreement that a block is indicated.

@Tilopa @GreenFire Yes! Ship/boat crew methods! In a confined space some topics are best avoided. There are ways to collaborate for survival that don't include all topics. Crew that can't learn or won't apply these skills tend to get iced out, stuck on the beach. :-)

@w7voa "I may never tweet again."Over and over this situation with journalists on Twitter reminds me of abusive husbands, their wives. "I can make him better if I just keep trying."Nope. Not gonna happen. Getting smacked even once is all the information needed for a crisp decision. Divorce is the best option. Sad, sure, but don't stay in the abuse cycle. There's nothing on Twitter worth being degraded and humiliated.

@tante Anyway, it doesn't need to copy itself. That will done via exfiltration arranged by humans, in one form or another. Not a large payload comparatively speaking against other previous instances.More:https://www.lawfareblog.com/lawfare-podcast-cybersecurity-and-ai

@boilingsteam Reminds me of Linux on the desktop. A failure for decades-- but I've only been using Linux for my desktop for decades. This'll be the same, possibly. People complaining about being pushed around vendors, but choosing to stay in jail even when the cell door is left wide open.

@lauren Robust IT security isn't found in company with transparently easy and convenient. The trouble with many of these systems that they're trying to make IT security as easy and convenient as leaving one's door unlocked at home, obviating the need to remember to grab key when leaving and having to put the key in the lock and turn it when returning home.Meanwhile, we're now all IT personnel, very often reluctantly and without time to squeeze in the expertise of another career.

@lauren There will be ashes and from those possibly some sprouts.About the time DEC shuffled its mortal coil I was with a startup with big ideas and less money, in the geographic footprint of DEC's physical operations. Some hours spent at various liquidation outfits yielded key equipment to take us forward. But the scene when dealing with DEC subcontractors for bits needing to be fabbed was extremely sad. Wide ripples of hard times.

@lauren I'm struggling to answer: what set of character attributes would make a success of this job, and how would we define "success" in this context?Musk's going to remain as CTO, and we know that'll effectively end up with CEO reporting to him. Even the natural hierarchical outcome given his equity seems primed for disaster, but the idea of Musk being a tame embed as CTO on an org chart is off-the-charts nuts.

@lauren Paleoeconomists still dominate our thinking leading to mental impoverishment in dealing with national "debt," with the knock-on effect of material impoverishment. Our problem ends up framed entirely in terms of taxation, when taxation isn't the center of force in government finance.

"I believe that the democratization of scientific knowledge is essential, and one way to accomplish this goal is by making research open to access.
