@strypey "we don't hear so much about thermal curtains and pelmets? https://www.appropedia.org/How_to_make_awe" Because passive-solar designers learned users don't want to schedule their lives around opening and closing things. Maybe during the pandemic, more people at home are able to learn and maintain such good systems. It's an opportunity, like increases in gardening.

@onepict RSS feeds are probably easier for screen readers, and mastadon can be followed with RSS.

I created an RSS news feed of my mastodon feed with Calibre ebook library software. Was simple, but I didn't fiddle with all the configuratuon options. #foss #fediverse @mark

@mark @mark Yes. My mastodon feed was rendered in periodic scheduled ebooks. It was only a test of #RSS #fediverse access. The formatting was easy to break. but the default was OK. I tend to experiment with configs too much, and the Calibre options were way more than I wanted to understand at rhe time. So I simply poked, broke, and walked away ;) I've used Calibre a great deal, and am sure this was workable.

I think of Calibre as quite different from an online service. It is a full #foss software suite, a data base populated by your copies of documents, in your locations, and an ebook reader and editor-formatter. So I guess I'm a fan. I hope you try it, and share your results. @mark

@scottjenson @mpt AFAIK most #foss contributions have been coming from developers charging their time to their employers. The voluntary nature of contributions and other participation does not mean unprofitable. Free as in freedom, not necessarily gratis. A huge number of firms' developers are part of the #foss ecosystem. That is often why they were hired. Still #foss projects are wise not to depend on individual businesses. #econ #development

@darius XMPP has those abilities. Federation with activitypub (like mastodon) is brand new, but xmpp has always been 'fedetated' across its own servers. There are also gateways to most social networks you could imagine. The 'DM"s van also be end2end encrypted.#xmpp

@darius fediverse/activitypub is currently being bridged to #xmpp/jabber (which is focused on the use-case you describe), including 'real' DM's, not just the kind transmitted and stored in open text as in mastodon. These efforts are very close to being ready for the public. My hunch is that Movim.eu might be the best first-use server for users to watch for a future gateway. BTW I would not recommend using mastodon for personal messages. #libervia

@jamey @strypey One large problem is that sometimes invisible contributors work in a way that does not profit from the type of online visibility developers enjoy. #fossy

@brewsterkahle 'Divide and conquer' is a ubiquitus meme in Western intellectual-history; Prize individualism and suspect collectivism. So terms for 'working together' might be praise or condemnation. #culture, #propaganda, #norms
