Working on my "UX and Open Source" talk, it's clear the challenges are much the same as with proprietary software: you either understand what UX has to offer or not. The key difference is philosophical. Some FOSS teams feel central control is unnecessary. As UX is often about making hard tradeoffs, it feels counter to the culture. However, FOSS teams need to make hard technical decisions all the time: they DO have (some) central control! UX is no different#UXDesign #OpenSource #FOSS #UX

@scottjenson My essay on this from 2008 mostly holds up, I think: https://web.archive.org/web/20080805012124/http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usabilityOn the other hand, we’re still puzzling over this 15 years later, so maybe my suggestions were totally unhelpful!

@mpt Thanks! I enjoyed that and seems to discuss many of the pressures facing #FOSS. So much of it appears to come from "but they're all volunteer and will just leave" concerns. That's clearly a concern but I'd also suggest that a clearly run (and planned) project will *attract* lots of new people, ones that care.If feels like a local maximum

What do YOU feel #FOSS needs in order to embrace #UX? There are clearly going to be teams that 'just don't get it" and I'm well past worrying about them. But there are teams that truly want better UX. I want to understand their needs. I'm assuming much of it is just having a better grasp of what #UXDesign wants to offer: broader exploration (and research) so the conversation can be more grounded and drive shared team decision making.

@scottjenson @mpt AFAIK most #foss contributions have been coming from developers charging their time to their employers. The voluntary nature of contributions and other participation does not mean unprofitable. Free as in freedom, not necessarily gratis. A huge number of firms' developers are part of the #foss ecosystem. That is often why they were hired. Still #foss projects are wise not to depend on individual businesses. #econ #development
