@dave although the major corporately owned "liberal" news groups and puniditutes professed shock, plenty of -progressives- openly voiced worry that something bad would happen -on- Jan 6. I know I did. My sister (who is a NYT kind of liberal) thought I was a genius for predicting it. So I have to say: I find it... interesting... that Politico runs this story now... after NOT doing so earlier in the game... and after cheerleading for (obviously wannabe and now full fledged) fascists like Ron desantis for for basically all of 2020-2021 and into 2022. Politico does both good reporting and pure propaganda- this is an example of the first. But the timing is "safe." Ask why. My guess is they think the degradation is so great that it's safe enough to "uncover" the truth. I would like to disagree, but I'm not quite convinced that I can.

@KimPerales Bush Senior was also Reagan's VP prior to his one term in the presidency. I would agree the press tried hard to paint both him and Reagan as moderates... but...were they? Another fun fact: prior to being Regan's VP, Bush Sr was head of the CIA. Call me paranoid, but when you allow anyone who heads ANY spy agency to ascend to other positions of power, you really already have pretty major problems on your hands.

@cappiello @thetechtutor @JillianMHurley soooo, you're suggesting that we listen non judgmentally to the folks who think POC, the gays, and women SHOULD have fewer rights than straight white men??Nah bro: that might work for *you,* but most of these folks already have hardened beliefs and blind spots a mile wide. So they are often inherently disrespectful to Others (such as POC, LGBT and women) even when they aren't trying to be, Really, they are, just take my word for it.So no, that's not gonna work for me. Having said that, straight white men may have some chance of talking sense into them, but women, POC and my LGBT peeps really do not,, nor should we have to subject ourselves to listening to abusive assholes.Remember, at this point in time, we're dealing with a segment of folks w)ho have been purposefully groomed by decades of lies spewed by Tucker Carlson, and the batshit crazy Marge Taylor Greene. So no, just no.

@thetechtutor @cappiello Dude: you go right ahead and listen to -your- moral code, but I am fine with fervently wishing bigots did not exist. I -will- shun them. I -will- go ahead and say to them and to anyone that will listen that right wing fascists are stunted and holding back the entire world from being a better, safer place. You can go right ahead and judge me for that, I don't really care.Fascists INTENTIONALLY break the social contracts that millions of us try to live by: which is something like: treat others as you would want to be treated, or at the very least: live and let live. Since they don't want to abide by the contract, they shouldn't live among the rest of us. Yet they keep trying to change this contract...We're different: you say you don't hate that. I do hate it and I'm getting damned tired of them. I want them gone.

@thetechtutor @cappiello and if calling someone "an abusive asshole" who demonstrably is 1) abusive and 2) acting like an asshole is something you think is equivalent to "hating" them, then, no offense man, but you may want to reconsider the differences between accurately describing despicable behaviors and enabling said abusive assholes.

@KimPerales glad corporate news orgs are getting to this story. The Lever broke it nine months ago, but somehow it wasn't picked up too much... https://www.levernews.com/otherposts/exposing-the-biggest-political-donation-in-u-s-history-2/

@KimPerales yes, 1.6 donation to a RW org is even more relevant in light of what ...news orgs... are digging up.Soooo, my main complaint is why it is -news orgs- bringing this stuff to light, and not the FBI.In light of all this <gestures around> the DOJ's FBI just stands by...acting exactly like a typical "law enforcement" arm in any authoritarian run country: corrupt to the bone but deluding themselves that they are heroes by busting diaper thieves.

@gulovsen Gonna rant a little.Although his wording was...high brow/avant garde, WHAT he was saying was actually not all that uncommon ...really. I was still a kid then, but can distinctly remember my -mainstream church going, fair-minded Dem, very much middle class parents railing about how Reagan- as CA governor- with his rich corrupt friends, and the racist bible thumpers were gonna destroy the state. My folks were not alone.I joined them 8 years later (and added MIC corruption to the mix) when he was looking to occupy the presidencyMillions of us OFTEN said these things in day to day conversations about both Bush's.Literally -millions upon millions- of normal people could see this coming. But the punditutes of the day kept amplifying bullshit. The only things unusual about what Zappa was saying is that 1) it got published and circulated in pop media, and 2) that he used bigger words than "bible thumping" "corrupt" "racist /sexist" and "greedy rich jerks:"

colonizers invaded most of the world... by force. They succeeded in MOST places for varying amounts of time, ...let's vaguely call it: several generations. That means they got to make the rules for those times, amplify their cultural values, and erase ones they didn't like, over the course of several generations...In other words: abusive men got to establish "countries" and make the rules for several generations. Is it any wonder the world is fucked up?

Obviously, many of the colonizers were brainwashed into thinking their cultures (blessed by their male gods) were good ones. And many -were -fleeing unjust conditions brought about by... other abusive men...but the fact remains that pretty much all the world's powerful nationstates got that way based -pretty primarily- on acts of violence. To think that the folks revered by those cultures, and MOST brainwashed by them would make truly "good" leaders is understandable (if you've also been brainwashed to believe your cultural values have been good), but...is it smart??MANY values based on "Might Makes Right" mindsets still infect our many of our cultural values. We also have a legacy of Renaissance thinking that helped us build fantastic technologies. Maybe it's time to stop oppressing* social scientists and let them work in the same ways.* yes oppressing: if you think academics are truly free to pursue certain *facts* around social organization ...you're still brainwashed.

@GreenFire @aka_quant_noir @kim_harding oh Lee...while I agree with #KeepItInTheGround and support the idea...YEARS of all my individuals efforts are made close to moot by my local Air Force base's emissions in about a week of their useless flying exercises. If that's not convincing enough, add in all the other useless stuff YOUR tax dollars are spent on... like the DAILY LE helicopter flyovers, coming to a neighborhood near you, soon. These absolutely stupid LE flyovers have encroached upon what used to be considered middle class (and so off limits) neighborhoods. Probably because they are convinced people growing their own veggies are both poor and terrorists.

FWIW: I think cruelty is -almost- the point, but not quite.Authoritarians are obsessed with proving they are in control... which is a common way to deal with fear. I mean: when do you personally turn into a control freak? It's not when you are truly happy or feeling secure, right? Nope, it's when we're anxious or fearful. Same with authoritarians. They are -really- fearful folks.AND, authoritarians -can't-ever admit to fear... because that would involve being vulnerable, if only with themselves... and for these sad humans, vulnerability is a -huge- no no. They see it as weakness. In reality, being -appropriately- vulnerable is -akshually- what allows people to feel all kinds of positive emotions like love, kindness, generosity, trust, etc...And if you completely avoid vulnerability, you really -can't- experience MOST positive emotions at all. So we get a bunch of zombified people who are simply enacting performative sadism. But why?1/2

WHY do stunted joyless zombies feel the need to engage in performative sadism? Excellent question. They conceive of the entire world of power as "ruling OVER" others. They can't handle shared power...because it would mean dealing in vulnerability, and again that equates (l"aughably) to "weakness for them.. So domination and other coercive forms of power are the only forms of power they can conceive of and recognize. And in order to -prove-you have power OVER other people, it has to be obvious that you are imposing your will on others......like 8 year old boy level obvious...exactly like 8 year old boys, really. because in their little minds: the ability to bully others really is proof that they have power...So to recap: these are joyless cowardly jerks convinced they have to coerce others to "prove" they are superior and in control. Way to live a life!2/2

I'm not an apologist for this court. I think at least three of those fuckers should be in jail. But It's not gonna do any good to expand the court and put in a few "good" people today, If big money can just buy more corrupt pigs 5, 10 or 30 years down the line.Related: Seeing a lot of takes about how racist the US still is. And, yes, it is…BUT IT IS CULTIVATED! The right is built on "might makes right." They use their ill gotten economic power to fully fund and cultivate their horrible ideologies. They buy these decisions.Big money is key to so many of the ills we still deal with, and they've done it again: they distract, divide and conquer, and it keeps fucking working.

@KimPerales "the US and other countries should have realized this on day 1"While far too many aspects of many so called "democracies" have been bought out by oligarchs, I am quite sure some honest folks within the US and most of other governments saw the looming disasters coming up, but the mediocre supervisors above them were either too stupid or too complicit to act responsibly.

@KimPerales "ready to sue" is better than nothing, but in a well functioning democracy, the instant firing (at the very least) of "officials" who follow orders that will clearly harm other humans would be the norm, with the harshest actions affect the upper and middle management slime buckets who pass the orders on down to the boots on the ground level workers. And laws would be in place to automatically jail and forever disqualify from office those who give those kinds of clearly unconstitutional and barbaric orders at the highest levels.
