Just in case anyone isn't believing the numbers they're hearing, here's an aerial view. Yes, this was by far the largest national demonstration in Britain since 2003.Hey you hearing this yet, Starmer? Or do we need to muscle our way into the Houses of Parliament to get your attention?

@FediTips Thus proving that the fedi is not as decentralised as we imagine it is. A big enough attack on the hosting providers could take most of it down at the same time.

@SethRudy It does sound worryingly plausible, doesn't it? Someone in that administration must be at least smart enough to understand that starving millions of Americans will trigger civil unrest.

White Christian ethno-nationalism is by far the biggest terrorist threat in the West. It's your typical mass shooter profile. It's by far the greatest danger to democracy, to women's rights and bodily autonomy, to ethnic minorities, to freedom of speech. It's currently the most destabilising influence on the global economy, and yet...some folks still hold fast to their Islamophobia. So I instantly lost several followers for saying something complimentary about Islam and a local mosque. Bizarre.

@futurebird I'm so well-known in activist circles, I attended an event today run by an organisation of which I'm not even a member, raised my hand to ask a question, and the host (a stranger to me) addressed me by name. ๐I absolutely cannot stand to be at home doing nothing, so treated a long period of ill health as an opportunity to fight for causes close to my heart, because no-one cares how many breaks you have to take if it's not a salaried job. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

@stux Humans and cats are trying to kill you, but you still have to do spidery things (like catch insects) to stay alive.I mean, the game could just literally be about being a spider? ๐ค๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

@futurebird Many of their songs are also history lessons! People of the Sun, for example, is about the Zapatista revolutionaries in Chiapas, Mexico, and references Aztec history (Emperor Cuauhtemoc) and historical oppression (Spanish conquest, Zoot Suit Riots). I don't think many of their original fans took all that in!Even Killing in the Name - widely dismissed as an outpouring of adolescent anger - is actually about white supremacy. Those who "burn crosses" are the KKK. Such an amazing band!

Mamdani's inaugural speech was one for the ages. Proving that if you're unapologetically progressive and politically left-of-centre, and say so loudly and proudly, the people will listen. Constantly pandering to the most reactionary forces is a losing strategy. Showing backbone and strong leadership, even challenging your own base to rise to the moment? That's how good people win. ๐๐ผ

@GeofCox My first reaction to the news today was to wonder how many wars of the past few decades might not have needed to happen, had the USA simply kidnapped government leaders and officials instead of flattening whole cities with bombs.

@Nimbius666 @GeofCox Yeah but Castro seemed to be almost supernaturally lucky! Former Cuban intelligence chief Fabiรกn Escalante claimed he survived a staggering 638 plots or attempts orchestrated by the CIA and Cuban exiles. Perhaps that's an exaggeration (the Church Committee only confirmed eight), but even so, someone up there was looking out for that dude!

@futurebird @emilymbender I can't get better though because it's poisoning its own dataset (the internet), with slop. "AI" content has already surpassed human-created content, and that's being fed straight back into the models. So model collapse is inevitable.(I realise you know this already, just underlining your point here!)

Have any of you just punched the bully right back in the face, and not been sorry about it? Like FAFO?Why are we trying to appease the worst "people" (I use the term loosely) in the world?Treat them like the scum they are.

@futurebird If they negotiate mining rights and access with officials in Greenland and Denmark, American companies get to profit from the rare Earth minerals without using military force. But if they *also* annex Greenland and take ownership, they can turn the world's largest island into a slave colony. Which might sound hyperbolic, but Silicon Valley is already backing proposals to establish new, low-regulation "freedom cities" in Greenland. That's the plan.

@Nonilex Also in, say, combat sports such as MMA, contenders are typically matched in a way that makes it a fair fight. No-one would watch if it was always obvious who was going to win, would they?So even in this case, the idea that some butch bloke identifying as female would storm all the competitions and win everything is...um, implausible to put it politely. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

Starmer will continue to pander to the right."We studied more than 70 different elections that took place in 12 western European countries over several decades, and found that when mainstream parties take more anti-immigration positions, it leads to more support for the radical right, not less. Weโve also found that when social democratic parties propose strongly reducing immigration numbers, this leads to less support for social democratic parties at the ballot box."https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/sep/26/labour-reform-uk-nigel-farage-immigration-voters

@futurebird Most folks don't make rational decisions, they just behave however others who are like them behave. So it's difficult for them to follow an argument if it suggests all those others are making bad decisions. Because that would mean they have to think for themselves, which is hard work. Also, most of these folks who can only follow the crowd, haven't even heard of the fediverse! It simply hasn't attracted enough media attention to penetrate their information spaces.
