I'm trying not to post "surprised pikachu face" memes about all of the people discovering that tiktok is now censoring coverage of protests, and mentions of Epstein.And I'm watching as everyone tramples over to Yet Another Corporate Platform where the same thing will happen in a few dozen months.Ya'll need to get out for real. @futurebird It truly is nothing short of amazing isn't it? Horrible things happen to them because of the nature of the platform, so what do they do? Just move to another of the same blasted thing. And then it hurts them, so they just move to another of the same thing.And whenever we try to tell them "hey, there is an alternative that won't screw you like that" they ignore us or even get mad at us.It's like Windows users complaining about Copilot + Recall wondering why we keep saying Linux

I've come to notice how there are big efforts made to migrate people to platforms. To recapture audiences in new spaces. This happens through media and influencers and I suspect some people spend a lot of money on it. Most people are simply not aware there is any other option.

Many people are so focused on being wherever they perceive everyone one else is, that they donāt do any deep thinking about what pitfalls may exist in that location. @futurebird All I can say is when I try to I get either ignored or fussed at. I tried to get a few people who really shouldn't have stayed on X as long as they did and just got such a cold shoulder. They never came to Mastodon. I assume they're on Bluesky, but no longer have contact with them to really tell (my main contact with a lot of people was Discord, but I gave it up while there was still a chance that "delete my account" actually meant delete it and not just disable it but keep data.)

@futurebird I don't think that's a fair analogy unless we reach the point that it costs you something to actually get air and water (beyond the relatively small amounts one spends on water right now) and they start injecting bad stuff into each.Really I'm not sure there is a good analogy. This is sort of a thing that is kind of almost specific to tech. (I mean there are other things that can be similar-ish, but usually with a lot more complexity involved.)

@futurebird Thing is, if someone has a large audience, and they tell their followers theyāre going somewhere elseā¦many will, um, follow them. I think thereās a lot of SM paralysis among people who could lead their audience to better environments. Years ago, we decided to xeriscape (low water, native plant gardens) our front yard. We tore up our lawn and replaced with native plants. Tried to get next door neighbours do the same, but they were uncomfortable because āno one else is doing it.ā š¤·āāļø

@springdiesel An upside of youTube is it can be embedded in other sites. While tiktok and most new platforms can't they want to lock the users in. I do expect youTube to try to eliminate this someday, but because they are old their algorithm is much less influential.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou Yes, a bit. But itās also spot on, with regard to how it feels to others. Even for me, a techy dude who started online interactions on FidoNet, Mastodon felt pointless and clunky at first. I canāt even imagine how an Instagram or Tik Tok user might feel today. Probably like stumbling through the dark alone with no perceived upside. Linux is a great parallel. It solves a very different problem, like the Fediverse. No wonder thereās a large overlap between the two.

@futurebird Most folks don't make rational decisions, they just behave however others who are like them behave. So it's difficult for them to follow an argument if it suggests all those others are making bad decisions. Because that would mean they have to think for themselves, which is hard work.Also, most of these folks who can only follow the crowd, haven't even heard of the fediverse! It simply hasn't attracted enough media attention to penetrate their information spaces.
