I hear your anecdote, and I'm glad you are well.I would also note, though, that there are no studies which have convinced me that helmets are useful statistically except in instances where one is at risk of solo accidents (young or inexperienced riders, or more dangerous riding like trails or racing). On the other hand, there is evidence that helmets can actually put people into danger. Numerous studies show that motorists drive significantly more closely to people wearing helmets. Numerous studies show increased incidence of concussions of helmet wearers over non-helmet wearers (more likelihood of head collision to hard object because of increased circumference of contact area). Most tellingly, studies also show that wearing a helmet has a greater improvement for safety among pedestrians than bicyclists. That is to say, the value of wearing a helmet when you are on your own two feet is more impactful than when you are on a bike. But, we don't wear helmets walking. The reason? Because despite the improvement on outcomes, the incidence rate is low, so we don't engage in this protective behavior, because we deem it not necessary. Similarly, wearing a helmet IN a car would bring a greater rate of return than on a bike, but we don't do that either. It's absolutely the case that a bike helmet will protect people from a low-intensity impact. The incidences where these happen are most likely when a bicyclist is outside there skill set, or they are engaged in dangerous bicycling. Rented bicycles don't come with helmets, and they have a very, VERY low injury rate. This is for many reasons: they have a low center of gravity, they have a low maximum speed, and they tend to be used by people of higher wealth, so they are likely to be used on better roads. More cyclists on the road, better roads, and less risky bicycling behavior (slower, etc.) are correlated with less injuries. There haven't been any studies I've ever seen that successfully correlate a helmet with definitive better outcomes, and there have been several which do the opposite.@billstclair @nina @progo

@nina WOW.I guess I didn’t see you at the supermarket earlier today then!(For a long moment, I thought a woman I saw today was you, especially because the mask made it easier to imagine it. I wondered why you were in Madison. Then it became more clear it wasn’t you, but I had a moment where I was trying to figure out explaining who I was until I realized she was a stranger.)Wildly impressive work on that bike ride, btw!

@ninapaley I think he is still trying to thread a needle of having been called a ‘t*rf’, disliking it, but still thinking that term means something, so needing some way to distinguish and point to the ‘real demons over THERE.’

@Nora Yeah, I hear you so well. I had a few waves of cancelling hit me, but the one that hit came last year when I publicly supported Maya Forstater and knocked my biggest freelance client out from under me. It's been hard ever since.I think you nailed it. Sadly.

@nina I was literally just listening to you and C talking with Angus Fox, and you were describing growing up. Your SF period sounds utterly fascinating (and relatable). I identified with a lot of what you were saying (which, as a male, felt odd but kinda great). We only met that one day - and then only barely - but you seem like you'd be quite the person to know.

@ninapaley @tangleofsnakes I know from your pictures over the years that you wear a helmet, but I found that comic both funny and question-raising: are you a helmet doubter? (Based on my own research into it from years ago, I am, though I don't proselytize about helmets other than to oppose mandatory helmet laws which appear to reduce the number of bicycles on the road - one of the biggest factors in bicycle safety is how common bicyclists are!)Sad you didn't get more laughs at that comic, though I'm not surprised.

I'm trying to find a graphic novel I only vaguely recall described a few years ago.Young girls (or girls and women?) can shapeshift (into wolves?), but boys can't. The artist who made it was cancelled for her alleged transphobia. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?@ninapaley @TatsuyaIshida

@ninapaley It was hard to watch this time.Thank you. I wouldn't say I'm comforted by the work this time around, but I continue to be moved by it, and one day, maybe that will help me and others.
