The Iranian boats can only keep up because they are built to lift up out of the water at speed due to hydroplaning.Aircraft carriers are the fastest non-hydroplaning ships on the ocean, and destroyers are not far behind.

       @Snidely_Whiplash @Sovereign @Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta Translation:  the boat has a set of small waterskis sticking out beneath the hull.  at high speed, the boat skims the surface and rises up on the skis.  the skis have very little drag allowing the boat to go even faster.  that's their purpose.

       That is the design for larger ships.For a small boat like this, they make the bottom flat and the stern to sit lower in the water so that when you get up to speed, it skims the top of the water rather than sitting down it in. It's a common feature of speed boats and recreational craft, like a cigarette boat or a competition hydroplane. Though hopefully you stay lower in the water than this one.
