Man, if true, they really have balls of steel because that would be insanely risky and dangerous. If true this is quite the damning statement on the US militaryThe F-4 was jokingly referred to as proof that you could fly a brick if you applied enough thrustLike an American muscle car it was fast in a straight line but not so maneuverable An F-16 in capable hands would obliterate an F-4 in seconds

The f4 Phantom hasnt been relevant since about 1979, those sanctions took a harder toll on Iran than I thought. LOL ---I glued together a model one in the late 80s as a kid.

I'm not shitting on Iran, but why not use the f16 as your chassis? The F4 wasnt really considered good even in Vietnam IIRC, but maybe I'm just not remembering very well.

I’m on mobile, so I don’t have the pictures, but there’s a pretty famous picture of a then new F-16 turning way inside an F-4E. The E model was the only Phantom that could even sort of turn.That Viper pilot should not have had much difficulty with a half century old Phantom.

@VikingWays @Bunsen @Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta @jb Wasn't the F-4 (or some variant) the Wild Weasel? Wasn't it a anti-SAM/AA SEAD type plane? I would think they are pretty capable in some respects for that type of missile profile. Obviously not as capable against modern opponents but still not something to fully disregard.

Phantoms are underrated and got a bad rep because in Vietnam the early models had no cannon and until they made tjem have one they Jerry-rigged Gatlin guns on them that didn't work. Its a mach 2 bomber interceptor with immense thrust.

Correct. The F-4 was designed to protect the U.S. Navy's carrier fleets against Soviet bombers. It was never designed to engage in dogfights. The SUU-16/SUU-23 gunpods frequently jammed. It wasn't until the F-4E model - the version with an internal 20 mm cannon - that their kill ratio over Vietnam increased.

@NitroDubs @jb @Sovereign it's possible they used it similar to a missile, firing a missile at the F16. Like, they saw the approach of the F16, aimed the F4 from take off to intercept at the take off trajectory, then fired a missile when in proximity and quickly landed.
