The confederates apparently made a submarine that they wanted to use to blow up Union ironclads and break the blockade of Charleston. The idea was to drive the submarine under a union boat towing a huge mine behind it that would then destroy it when it was well past. Unfortunately it was a deathtrap that killed two crews and then the captain.

@Ghislaine Wonder weapons rarely win the war. If you're lucky they might help you win the next war, or the war after that.

Wasn't the idea to use a huge pole to stick a mine to the side of the ship?First outing failed because someone fucked up the diving sequence and flooded the sub, everyone died. Second outing failed because the mine blew up as soon as they made contact. Technically not the sub's fault.

@Eiregoat @Charles_in_Charge @Ghislaine As a German. I judge societies based on their aesthetics of tanks and planes.

I think this is the closest Ireland has, although it was originally made in the UK.It was recently carefully restored by a veteran.

It's possible it was used by the tans, although I'm not sure. It was then sold to the Irish Free State who used it in the civil war. I think that particular one might have been present at Béal na mBláṫ where general Michael Collins was assassinated (helping bring around an end to the war).

@Eiregoat @Charles_in_Charge @Ghislaine Grab what you can! Michael Collins is a revolutionary that sadly never gets enough respect! Heil!

@Eiregoat They switched to the pole after killing the first two crews and Beauregard ordered that it be operated as a surface craft from then on
