@jeremiahThe collapse of the West started long before even Tolkien.

@ILoveAmericaNews the roman empire fell mainly on account of the collapse of the middle and lower classes by way of mass immigration until the only native Romans were an administrative class overseeing armies of mercs. One of those, Alaric, was responsible for the sack of rome.I would think Tolkein was more likely thinking of Shakespeare's "the fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves", Shelley's Ozymandias ( https://poets.org/poem/ozymandias ), and the state of the post-war British upper class, well-lampooned in Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster and relatives in his contemporary (to Tolkien) novels.

@ILoveAmericaNews @jeremiah Excerpt from Shelley's poem:Tell that its sculptor well those passions readWhich yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:And on the pedestal these words appear:'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'Nothing beside remains. Round the decayOf that colossal wreck, boundless and bareThe lone and level sands stretch far away."

@ILoveAmericaNews @jeremiah The American humorist Ogden Nash satirized Shelley's poem: I met a traveler from an antique show,His pockets empty, but his eyes aglow.Upon his back, and now his very own,He bore two vast and trunkless legs of stone.Amid the torrent of collector’s jargonI gathered he had found himself a bargain,A permanent conversation piece post-prandial,Certified genuine early OzymandialAnd when I asked him how he could be sure,He showed me P. B. Shelley’s signature.

@ILoveAmericaNews @jeremiah If you were a kid who grew up in the 60s you would be more familiar with the Ogden Nash satire. His poetry was very witty and rhyme - y. Is that even a word? I think I'm lucky that I was exposed to poetry and literature then. I am also a huge fan of A.A. Milne of Winnie the Pooh fame. His poems are the apex of fun.
