@historyofpunkrock Amazing album. The thing that made me have a Smiths period.

@historyofpunkrock I saw The Smiths quite a number of times, including a show supporting the Gang of Four when very few people seemed to know who they were. Morrissey’s ⭐️ quality showed. At the ICA, a small room, their roadie handed us all gladioli. My mate had hay fever and spent the show sneezing. People seemed to miss the humour, I mean There is a light that never goes out is funny. As for Mr Shankly. For a few years they were amazing. Sad to read about Morrissey these days.

@historyofpunkrock A brilliant album, despite my revulsion at Morrissey’s recent assholery. The cover photo is taken from the poster for Emile De Antonio’s 1968 documentary “In the Year of the Pig”, which is the best film I’ve ever seen on the origins of the Vietnam War. In the original photo, the words on the Marine’s helmet are “Make War Not Love”.

@historyofpunkrock The Smiths played my hometown, Leicester, UK, four times. The first time touring Hand In Glove, and last time was touring Meat Is Murder. I was lucky enough to see the other two gigs: circa What Difference Does It Make?, at a sold out Leicester University, 16 February 1984, where I was down the front and got covered in gladioli, and, a swift return, a month later, at De Montfort Hall. It's such a shame the political path Morrissey has taken nowadays.https://youtu.be/53Ayy9yzpRQ?si=w73pkTcxzzZezwen

@historyofpunkrock To bring it back to The Smiths' punk roots: Drummer, Mike Joyce, was previously in a Manchester punk band called The Hoax. When we were doing our PhDs, and teaching at De Montfort University, in Leicester, UK, I used to share an office with the bass player from them, Steve Mardy aka Sox, who became a good friend of mine.https://youtu.be/8iK52omRSqI?si=6j5vRUFvs1TMtTl6
