As I watch the Olympic Games, I’m reminded of something many people still try to pretend isn’t true: sports in the U.S. have never been apolitical. The differences become even clearer when you compare the Summer and Winter Games.Summer sports are often rooted in teams, schools, parks, and community programs. These are sports that can be supported by neighborhoods, coaches, and public infrastructure. And because of that, you see far more diversity in both race and economic background.

Winter sports tell a very different story. When I watched 41-year-old Lindsey Vonn crash on the slope and get airlifted off the course, one of my first and lingering thoughts was, “who is paying for all of this?”The training. The surgeries. The rehab. The equipment. The coaches. The travel. The years of uninterrupted support required to make it possible for this white woman to keep going, to become the hero of her own story.

Meanwhile, millions of people in this country can’t afford basic healthcare. That’s political.Winter Olympic sports are largely individual or pair events that require personal wealth, elite exposure, proximity to mountains or ice rinks, specialized equipment, and years of private investment. They require a life where survival is not the primary concern. Where risk is sought out and survivable because financial ruin is not on the table. That’s not just athleticism. That’s insulation.

As I throw myself into watching sports like curling, trying to understand the rules and the lore, I realize something else…my interest in the Winter Games has always been from the outside.I’m watching something that is culturally, economically, and socially distant from my lived experience and from that of most people in my community. Not because we lack talent. Not because we lack discipline. But because we lack access.

The contrast between the Summer and Winter Olympics quietly exposes how systems, institutions, and policies shape who gets to dream, who gets to train, and who gets to fall without it destroying their life.So when people say sports are a unifying, apolitical space, what they really mean is they’ve never had to question who gets to be there in the first place. The Olympics don’t just showcase athletic excellence.

They showcase the quiet architecture of the myth of white supremacy and the way this country is built to support certain aspirations while others are told to be grateful just to survive.#LifeBeyondTheSupremacyMyth #MythOfWhiteSupremacy #ProfitWithoutOppression #KimCrayton

@KimCrayton1 White lives matter too, you know! I'm proud to be white and I think the world has a lot to thank the white man for. Basically all science and technology and democracy, and freedom of speech. I could go on and on, but you get the point. So I think the US should have a white history month to teach its citizens to appreciate white people.

white people didnt even create the numbers in your name my friendOur parents, grandparents, and great grandparents lied to us like we were some kind of gullible schmucks, just because they were too embarrassed to handle the real stories of what happened. But I'm not a baby who needs made up bedtime stories to sooth my ego and know my worth. My ancestors were a mix of thieves who stole Black and Indiginous ideas and pretended that they thought of them first, and refugees who joined the cause of abolition and made cute bow ties out of the railways of rich genocidaires. Some did noble inventive stuff, others did wicked gross stuff, but a whole bunch were mediocre nobodies who dont exist anywhere anymore except as maybe a name in an old govt record. The people I come from don't need to have been special, I make my own way.

@growfediverse @KimCrayton1 You must work on reading comprehension. I was not mentioning numbers once in my post. You failed quite miserably there. I will pray hard for Jesus and Trump to open your eyes. ✝️ 🇮🇱 🇺🇸 All naughty people will be deported.
