RE: https://mastodon.green/@plazi_species/116023192433967796Story concept: Consider myrmecophilous beetle but it fools myrmecologists into thinking it's an ant too. Even thought it's totally NOT an ant, when you look at it soon after you forget what you saw and think "that was an ant, a nice ordinary ant" ... it takes decades to discover.

A fight breaks out at a conference over it. "It's and ANT. What do you mean it's a beetle. We can all see it is a perfectly normal ant!"

@futurebird I was already feeling a bit disturbed that this looks like it's assembled from leftover bits of corn cobs, and now you go and give it mentalist powers (which it clearly also has the antennae for).

@cavyherd Love this. It's better than the concept the "SCP" people came up with for why mind erasing drugs might exist which was "well there is a giant sea snake that everyone keeps forgetting about"Psychic myrmecophilous beetles explain everything.

@hattifattener @futurebird spies dabbing a bit of myrmecomimesis hormone on their clothes so they can sneak into any facility without being noticed - the guards just think "ugh, another ant, gotta tell the guys to stop leaving open food around the lunchroom"

@futurebird That must be the myrmememetophilous genus of beetle, I suppose.

@CliftonR I don't think all of the myrcophiles even come from the same genus. It's so popular that it's evolved multiple times.
