A rather delicate-looking moth (species unknown) from Tamil Nadu in South India, found sitting on a car cover. The upper side of the body also had small but vivid red patches, not visible in these photos but rather striking in flight.#insects #entomology #nature

@futurebird I thought I'd take a photo of an ant, but it was on my spectacles so I couldn't get a good look at it and also couldn't get a very good photo, and after all that it turned out to be an ant-mimicing spider instead. Hmpf.

@futurebird I couldn't see much of anything with my spectacles in my hand 😅 but look at those pedipalpy things. Based on location and colouring, I'm guessing it could be Myrmarachne melanocephala (e.g., see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/301466012).

@futurebird @orangelantern What you said upthread somewhere about missing out on incoherent human writing is painfully relatable. It's bad enough trying to figure out if you've misread something, missed something earlier, or if the author knew what they were talking about but made a mistake writing it, or just didn't know what they were talking about, or some combination thereof…

@futurebird I was already feeling a bit disturbed that this looks like it's assembled from leftover bits of corn cobs, and now you go and give it mentalist powers (which it clearly also has the antennae for).

@futurebird Rather, that *all* languages are exposed to *all* of the quirks of the C ABI if they want to use system calls or interoperate with existing libraries (themselves perhaps written in different languages and compiled with different tools). You can try to start off small, but you rapidly find more and more cases you can't deal with simply.

@futurebird I remember reading a stack of old magazines from the 1930/40s that belonged to my grandfather (I think he got them from some USian who was posted to India during WW2). I just can't remember the name of the magazine any more, but they were full of tales of daring adventure and engaging pastimes for boys (of course).I'm pretty sure there was one issue with stories about army ants, piranhas, AND a swarm of vampire bats.

@futurebird Yikes! A >50km/h flood of partly fermented molasses does not sound like a good time.(Strange that I had to scroll so far down in that article to figure out that the tank was made of steel; and even then, it's not stated explicitly, only suggested. That was the first question I had!)It's not uncommon for ant colonies to survive floods by forming a dense floating mat of ants, right? I'm sure I've seen that in my childhood, but I don't know if it's only a particular kind of ant.
