So to my computer savvy friends I have two questions. As im researching the desktop computer i hope to aquire in the near future I stumbled across computers that come preloaded with linux. They allegedly you can save money because you dont have to pay for the Windows license. Which makes sense but every one I see is a fair amount more expensive, not less. Also ive never really had any trouble with installing or using it.https://itsfoss.com/get-linux-laptops/Second question: ive also stumbled across printers that are alleged to be optimized for linux. Now printers are something ive struggled with so does anyone think a printer optimized for use with linux might be less of a struggle to use?https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/hp-bw-laserjet-...

@Escoffier I was told (many years ago) that PC clone makers only paid $10 for each Windows license, provided they didn't have to provide restore media. If it's anything like that now the cost savings are negligible.

@judgedread Makes sense. The Linux ones are very nice but run 3-4 times the cost of a similar one loaded with Windows.

@Escoffier Brother printer 'just worked' in my case. Selling the same models for 20 years has its perks I guess(Buyer beware: this only applies to the boring Brother printers around since the dinosaurs. They've started to bank on their 'reliability' brand and started worsening a bit to chase the đź’¸ like every other printer brand...)

@Escoffier if you need a pre-build with linux pre-installed and wont just build your own rig and install a distro yourself then you are NGMI trying to run it outside of some groid-locked tune of Ubuntu.

@JRamsey Im a chef m8 and while im not stupid let me ask you this could you produce a 12 course fine dining banquet for a hundred people in a week which is both regionally and seasonally appropriate? No?Well then i guess youre not gonna make it?Im not a computer guy and the only point im trying to make is different people have different skills theyve worked hard to hone. If yours is computers that's great but not every person can build their own computer.

@madcuzbad @judgedread I kind of feel the same. Honestly the only real problem I've ever had in 16 or so years on Linux is mating it with a printer. It just seemed like it might be a little easier and possibly help with the printer issue?

@Escoffier my point is that these are simple procedures. You can cook fine meals, you can figure out a bootable USB with mint/arch/debian/fedora/opensuse. Pre-builds are for retards, worse that you would step into a Linux environment without even knowing how to assemble a basic desktop machine.

@JRamsey OK I can understand better why you were a bit snappy with me now ive done that and never had a problem. I was just wondering if these ones that come preloaded and supposedly might be better in some mysterious way? To be clear i have installed Linux on many computers with zero problems with the exception of hooking a printer up to it.

@Escoffier @JRamsey I can use Linux, but I prefer Windows for ease of access and day to day operations. If I were amassing TBs of torrented movies, games, and anime, I would use Linux.

@Largo @Escoffier you can get raped by a 60,000 lb gorilla. Having the fundamentals of how a system works before you step into a new environment is how you prevent yourself from getting suplexed by simple mistakes. advising preparation is not being uppity.

@Escoffier I was being snappy with you because I have fucked shit up irrepairably more than retards know is possible.I advise you avoid those pre-made systems on a manner of principle. You want a good cake or you want a cake someone else made who tells you its a good cake? If every normgroid youtuber techbro can make a tutorial on it then you 110% can put your own together.

@Escoffier Just a guess but if it’s coming from a ”real” vendor (as it looks like a lot of those are( then you’re also buying their driver support for the unit which incurs more cost since it’s the same Windoze dollars spread over fewer users.

The only possible way in which they could be “better” is that someone went and made sure that all the hardware in there is actually supported by Linux. Which isn’t really much of an issue for desktop computers these days, but many laptops still come with proprietary shit that may or may not work on Linux. My laptop for example has a backlit keyboard which only works on Linux if you install some third party tool for it, which hasn’t made it into the repos for any popular distro and only provides pre-built packages as RPMs. Meaning I’d either have to use an RPM-based distro or compile the thing myself if I want that to work.

@judgedread @Escoffier these days it wouldn't surprise me if microsaar actually takes a loss up front on windows just to get it into consumer p.c.s and suck up data. if that's true, it's no surprise windows machines are cheaper

@Escoffier there's no reason i know of to buy a linux-preloaded computer, if you can find it with windows cheaper and don't have any issues doing it yourself. you'd know if there was some specific use case otherwisethat said, i have bought system76 before and been pretty happy with itlinux optimized printers i have no data on

@Escoffier call me a faggott if you will, but if you want another hobby, run linux. if you just want a computer that works, buy a mac.printers all generally suck, but you can generally buy decent used business class laser printers for cheap if you live in a metro area.laser toner doesn't dry up like cartridges and the price per page is super cheap.
