Are the police in Belgium allowed to randomly stop, search, and detain people without naming grounds or offering a plausible cause? A friend just got searched and questioned entrapment-style on the way back to the b&b#FOSDEM #Belgium #Bruxelles #acab

More specifically, what I failed to google up is:1. Whether the police is allowed to refuse to give their names and ranks? I'd expect not, but couldn't confirm2. Whether the police may refuse to being recorded (e.g. with a mobile phone camera)? Presume not, couldn't confirm3. Whether one may refuse providing id and not be detained?4. Whether one may refuse being searched and not be detained?#fosdem2026 #fosdem

@nobody another reminder to start migrating from LUKS to something deniable (is veracrypt?) and use hibernation instead of suspend

@nobody> "...illegal to wear clothing that hides your face partially or completely (for example, the burka and niqab) in public places. You risk a fine of up to 137 euros and detention for up to 7 days..."Funny, because I'm pretty sure that the same law in Russia only applies to public demonstrations, not to daily conduct

@nobody another funny bit is that I'm failing to find in Belgian or Finnish legislation most of the same protections introduced in Russia during Putin's break/Medvedev's term, e.g. a defined order of "a police officer's addressing a citizen". One popular (ru|you)tube category used to be people teaching traffic inspectors to perform the mantra of "your name, rank, department, and what are thegroundso of your address" and explaining that "yes I am allowed to record you because you are on duty"

@kkarhan it is and it's dangerous too: even something as innocuous as "making noises at night near the hotels that host ICE" is grounds for detention and administrative action. I still didn't find whether it's OK to take out your phone and start recording yourself either. We're yet to see how the US comes out of the Trump episode, but I find it self-evident that Europe as it is today would find itself completely defenseless if it were to spawn one of their own...
