       Ever since /etc/hosts went out of fashion, things basically went south from there.

       @jpmens Only resolving your friends‘ hostnames is getting more attractive each year. 🙃

       @icing @jpmens At the Social Web devroom, there were talks of "pet names", name resolution where you locally name resources **and** you can use friends' names and friends' friends' names.Example with a dummy syntax:mom (local name)alex!mom (not your mom)dennis!jane!dog (Jane's dog, you know, the Jane who is friend with Dennis)Fully decentralized.

       @bortzmeyer @icing I approve of the UUCP-style names.

       @jpmens @icing One of the reasons to use this syntax is that you can add to "pet names" things like"well-known roots" so everyone knows what icann!com!example means.

       @jpmens @icing And it is important to note that "pet names" are only for name resolution, this syntax does not imply actual routing of the traffic. (Unlike UUCP, which mixed both).

       @bortzmeyer @jpmens How then do I verify that I indeed talk to Jenni‘s dog who is not a friend of Denis?

       @icing @jpmens Trust is transitive. You trust Dennis (it's in your local store), Dennis trusts Jane, etc. You decide how far this trust will go. (Possible improvment: a flag to say that a given node in your local store should not be followed.)

       @bortzmeyer @jpmens Yeah, I might not want to auto-trust all of jp‘s names…💁🏻‍♂️

       @icing @jpmens The good thing is that, from this syntax, you see clearly in the name if the name is known directly, through hearsay, or through very remote connections.
