https://spectator.com/article/britain-is-becoming-a-surveillance-state-but-no-one-seems-to-care/Over the past decade, police have increasingly used live facial recognition to identify possible criminals. Since cameras surveilled the crowd at the Notting Hill Carnival in 2016, facial recognition vans have been appearing in various parts of London and other cities, with the first permanent cameras installed in Croydon. Over the past year in England and Wales, police have scanned the faces of over seven million passers-by.All this has happened amid rumblings of concern and in something of a regulatory vacuum. In a sleight of hand which glosses over the lack of democratic process, the Home Office presents the consultation as the beginnings of a remedy. More candidly, it admits that the purpose of a new legal framework for facial recognition is to ‘give the police sufficient confidence to use it at significantly greater scale’.Accordingly, the consultation kicks off with a series of questions about which technologies the framework should permit, avoiding any first-principle enquiry about whether live facial recognition should be used at all. In contrast to continental Europe where the EU AI Act restricts the use of live facial recognition for law enforcement, the Home Office assumes the introduction of cameras to every town and city is simply a matter of adopting ‘a valuable tool to modern policing’.https://archive.ph/EP3E8

@Flick Probably nobody complains because anyone who works in an office since 2020 has probably had to use "live facial recognition" software, simply to access their computer every morning.

@Flick It's not mass surveillance - nobody is looking at the majority of the cameras. It's the promotion of FEAR OF mass surveillance. Jeremy Bentham was wrong! - by Radical Cartoons https://share.google/Na3aYNs6V7Itaejlb

@RadicalCartoons @Flick I was in my local Asda with my parents a few months back. I mentioned to the cashier that I wasn't a fan of this tech. I didn't do it in a nasty way, because it's neither his fault or responsibility. During the check out, we put through some wine and my mum did her usual joke about him needing to see some ID to check she was old enough. The cashier then got a bit pissy and said *now you like digital ID?* or words to that effect. It's interesting how people conflate issues. I happen to agree with showing ID to protect minors from making some purchases. That's not the same as monitoring all of us to see that we're being good boys and girls. I had a similar one in Lidl's. I was asked if I had a store card and I said my usual that I didn't because they're just spying apps to collect data. Again, I don't do it rudely because the cashiers are just doing their job. A chap in the queue behind me shouted at me that the government knows what we're doing all the time if we have a mobile phone, so why was I bothering (ie I should just get with the programme). It's fascinating how many people will cheer for their enslavement and demonise those of us who raise concerns.

@HebrideanHecate @RadicalCartoons @Flick I just smile and say that if that's what they want I'll not stop them, but I don't want it.

@KeepTakingTheSoma @HebrideanHecate @RadicalCartoons @Flick I was in a store a while back and was asked if I wanted their points card. When I declined, the cashier assured me that it was free. I told them that if it's "free" it's because I am not the customer, I am the product. Took him a second for it to register. I've told my students the same about social media. Nothing is free, these companies aren't in the business of giving things away, they are making money from it somehow otherwise they wouldn't do it.
