https://www.theregister.com/2026/01/21/ireland_wants_to_give_police/The Irish government is planning to bolster its police's ability to intercept communications, including encrypted messages, and provide a legal basis for spyware use.The Communications (Interception and Lawful Access) Bill is being framed as a replacement for the current legislation that governs digital communication interception. […]The Bill will bring communications from IoT devices, email services, and electronic messaging platforms into scope, "whether encrypted or not."In a similar way to how certain other governments want to compel encrypted messaging services to unscramble packets of interest, Ireland's announcement also failed to explain exactly how it plans to do this.

I had to order a new door mat, after last week’s accident. Amazon. Due yesterday but never turned up. Today, it’s been four stops away (and motionless) for two hours. wtf? I was really banking on it being here before the weather comes, in case I get drifting and need to use the kitchen door (from which I have filtched the mat to have a non-stinky one by the back door).

https://spectator.com/article/has-xi-jinping-fought-off-another-coup/According to unconfirmed reports, General Zhang Youxia, China’s vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), sent a company of troops (over a hundred or more) to the government’s Yingxi Hotel in western Beijing on 18 January. Their mission was to arrest Xi Jinping. A few hours before, the Chinese president – alerted by an informant – set in motion countermeasures. Troops under the command of Cao Qi, head of Xi’s Central Guards Bureau, ambushed Zhang’s soldiers. In the ensuing gunfight at Yangxi Hotel, nine guards were reportedly killed along with dozens of Zhang Youxia’s soldiers.Throughout China, military movements have been banned and troops and officers have been confined to barracks. This is the bloodiest of a blizzard of rumours that have swept the internet over the weekend. If true, this is the most dramatic military scandal since the death of Mao Zedong’s army chief Lin Biao in 1972.https://archive.ph/0D5Ce

https://www.spiked-online.com/2026/01/26/islamists-have-been-given-a-veto-over-public-life/It matters not one iota what you think of UKIP. To prevent anyone from holding a ‘Walk with Jesus’ because you fear a ‘local adverse reaction’ is to play a dangerously divisive game. What the Met should have done is police those that they suspect will commit violence (local Islamists), not punish those who, by their own admission, are unlikely to be ‘disorderly’ (UKIP). In doing the opposite, the Met have made themselves the footsoldiers of Islamism and the enemies of freedom.Who will now deny there is an Islamist veto over much of our public life? Courtesy of the moral cowardice of our institutions, Islamists enjoy staggering power over who is allowed to assemble in public, where, for how long, and for what reasons. The Met’s capitulation to Whitechapel extremists comes hot on the heels of the Maccabi Tel Aviv scandal, when West Midlands Police banned Jews from Israel from attending a game at Villa Park because they caught wind of the fact that local elements were planning to arm themselves to attack those Jews. West Midlands Police had earlier banned Birmingham’s 2025 Diwali celebrations, again out of ‘concerns for public safety’.

@Gnomeshatecheese That’s a big rolling pin! I should try stuffed pasta some time. I’m surprised that such a small amount of egg in the fillings is worthwhile. Having just saved the third recipe, while you’re told at the pasta-making stage to save half an egg it is never actually mentioned again, which is odd.
