I don't know why I'm surprised by the surreal nature of the show, I guess I didn't prepare for it. I like it, though, especially the soundtrack. the animation is also extremely expressive, almost feels more like a cartoon than an anime at times.

@bleedingphoenix It's a really good anime, one of my favorites. I think it did a lot to popularize the band who did all the music, The Pillows, in the US.Adult Swim paid for squeals to be made, and they were horrible. It turns out that when Americans pay for something to be made by people who had nothing to do with the original, it's trash.

@Elliptica > when Americans pay for something to be made by people who had nothing to do with the original, it's trashthat's most creative things, no?but yeah it's fun, I'm binging it while getting some work done. I think I've settled into what to expect so I'm enjoying the moments more.

I get that these transformations are supposed to be some adolescent release, but it's not clicking with me just yet. they are great, though. I like this new girl, too, she's cute.bonus: neko costume

oh hey, it's that military girl. it's funny how I know these characters from the internet.this is a weird episode, for sure. the theme is jealousy, in some form, but also mustering the confidence to take a shot... I think? I definitely understand a lot of the more physics-breaking aspects now.

man a lot happened this episode. there's more drama than I expected from the show, Naoto still dealing with his strange relationship with Haruko, but still wanting to please Mamimi who sees him as a substitute for his brother... it's all so emotionally tangled like most stories about young people are. not to mention things like Haruko being an alien and whatever that entails. still great presentation, though, surreal to see a South Park-inspired bit in all of this.

what a positively odd show. and binging something is odd for me, as well, so there's that. I think I'll rewatch it soon to chew on longer, it's only two hours worth of episodes.there's a lot going in the finale, and yet it still feels very focused. Naoto kinda takes the reins here, being subject to his own emotions before. I guess you could say this was really about self-control, not being manipulated by his feelings for others. and that earns him some respect, at least in my book. top it off with a lot of style and fun moments and I really enjoyed this watch.

@bleedingphoenix i had to rewatch it multiple times before i could understand what was actually happening in this anime but it's fair to say it's one of the greatest ever made

@npc I listen to a good deal of post-rock, and FLCL gave me a similar feel while watching it. the way it presents things has an almost high-school production to it, or perhaps that's merely because it came out in the 2000s. that plus its visuals are really top-notch, one of my favorite anime is Kill la Kill and I can see the Gainax DNA from this to that.

@bleedingphoenix 2000s were a time when they were still playing with new and original ideas, before otakus really ruined the industry

@npc it's certainly unique, and it also certainly feels like it's a story first. I feel like a lot of the new stories feel less like stories and more like bringing characters and worlds to life; nothing wrong with that, but it's less focused. this feels like it has something to say and everything revolves around presenting those ideas, plus the animators wanting to draw fun stuff.

@bleedingphoenix There is a lot of debate as to what the show is actually about, but I think that's because a lot of people get confused by the main plot, which is mostly nonsense.A big thing a lot of people miss is the importance of Naoto's brother, because he's basically missing. Besides that, we get the impression that he's really important to him, considering how he got upset when Haruko took over his old bunk, and the frequent baseball motifs throughout the story. I think the other character people forget about is Ninamori, who is dealing with her own problems revolving around her parents divorce. Then you have Mamimi, who is holding onto Naoto's brother. she seems stuck, despite being 17 she still dresses like a middle schooler, and she is clinging onto Naoto (who probably looks like his older brother?).Looking at all of that, I think the main theme of FLCL is asking "what does it mean to be mature", and the answer it's trying to give is "to be honest with your feeling, and learning to take action / not living in the past".Both Ninamori and Naoto think maturity is being stoic at first. Ninamori seems ambivalent to her parents divorce, and people tell her she's mature for that. Then later on she says that she cried in front of her parents, letting them know how she honestly feels.Naoto is jaded by adults, who he sees as stupid. He's mad at his brother for abandoning him, and his father and grand father are both immature. At the same time, he's upset that "nothing ever happens", and so, with Haruko as the trigger, he learns to take action himself.Similarly, Mamimi learns to move on, realizing her boyfriend has abandoned her.But maybe I'm wrong and the whole thing is nonsense. It's a really weird show, but it's one that feels like it's trying to say something.

@bleedingphoenix i admit i haven't seen a lot of nu-anime but the ones i have seen really feel like they only exist because the characters are attractive or they're trying to be "edgy," or both. none of them felt like they had any coherent ideas beyond repeatedly beating you over the head with something obvioussample_7449d897e12d78d758132e7275adcb88.jpg

@Elliptica @bleedingphoenix the show is one of my top 5 anime, and I've watched it several times since it first aired. You're not wrong on most, if any, points. Good analysis.

@Elliptica @bleedingphoenix Yeah, a lot of the kids are trying to be adults, acting how they think grown-ups are supposed to. Ninamori's feigning indifference about her parents, Mamimi's pretending to not care about being abandoned by her savior, and Naota's kind of testing out a different persona every episode because he hasn't decided what kind of adult he wants to be yet.The adults who actually are mature are ones who don't mind looking silly (Kamon). Immature adults are like Amarao, putting up his appearance of a badass macho agent when really he's just like Naota; he isn't presenting himself, but instead putting on a show of how he thinks a cool adult is supposed to act.Cool people can only be those unconcerned with looking cool, and mature people can only really be those who don't concern themselves with the appearance of maturity.
