       Most drug abusers in China obtain drugs with narcotic-like effects from pharmacies. After the Chinese government noticed this, they banned the most commonly abused one—dextromethorphan (DXM)—which had the fewest side effects and the best excitatory and hallucinogenic effects. Now most people have switched to pregabalin, but pregabalin is highly addictive. The government is now planning to ban pregabalin as well, which means drug abusers will be forced to turn to more dangerous alternatives, such as amantadine hydrochloride or memantine hydrochloride—both of which are very risky drugs.I’m really envious of Americans >_<

       @coolbean In China, dextromethorphan (DXM) used to be available over the counter without any prescription, and it was extremely cheap—one box cost just 8 RMB (about 1 USD), or even only 6 RMB when bought on online shopping platforms. Back then, all you needed was 8 yuan to go to a pharmacy, buy a box of DXM, and you could experience effects similar to ketamine. Taking two boxes would produce a feeling like methamphetamine. During that period, a huge number of kids aged 13 to 20 were using it. I was 15 at the time and would take almost two boxes nearly every day.

After doing it a few times, just holding it near my mouth would already make me feel nauseous and want to vomit — the taste was unbearably bitter. Once I swallowed it, my whole body would start trembling uncontrollably, followed by violent vomiting that continued until my esophagus began to burn with pain.Looking back, I realize I wasn’t taking dextromethorphan for any kind of high; it was self-harm. I was doing it to cover up or drown out the pain of the anxiety disorder.
