RE: https://mastodon.online/@alexwild/115975907265196434How does he know they have "a lemony flavor"?This is a scandal that will rock the world of ants. (My husband ate an ant by mistake once. He was using the aspirator all wrong. I forgave him... eventually. #PicaTheCat? Eats ants on purpose! So, what was THIS?)

I have never eaten an ant. I could not. Poor girls. Though... they do eat each other which kind of takes away from it. But the day of "unite all colonies" is coming.

@gretared Imagine if you tried to do maximal damage to the titian eating you alive and they were like "oooh spicy" RIP she went out fighting in her own way. :(

@futurebird Formic acid. Sour with an unpleasant buggy aftertaste. At least in the Northern hemisphere. Anyway, to my mind the animal is the nest. Individual ants are more analagous to cells.

@lemgandi IDK if the ants would totally agree. But they are also very willing to "go out in a blaze of glory" over just about every little thing.

@futurebird years ago i met some very "forage all the things" folks - built their small home almost without buying any materials, just went by construction sites of big fancy houses to see what excess material was being discarded, spotted roadkill deer and came back with the bicycle trailer to harvest it, etc. etc.Anyway they ate ants as salad dressing.

@futurebird oh, i once had a mouthful of tea made from hot water that had ants in it. it was foul, (formic acid) and the young cubscout who made it had to try again before he was awarded his tea-making badge.but, the Indigenous people of now-called-australia traditionally eat several types of ants⦠which would answer your question about how he knows the flavour.

@futurebird This is not the only lemony ant I've eaten, either! Atta sexdens is a good citrusy South American species.

@futurebird When I was in Australia; I was told that honeypot ants were an important part of bush tucker. But I cannot speak to anyone eating the other ants around the place.

@futurebird somewhat unrelated but my partner found a cheap used mini fridge which means we now have cold water and co2 and thus sparkling water at a whim. this is good because we dislike buying lightly flavored bubbly water in cans. partner got a selection of flavorings for said sparkle water. one was good bottled lime juice. kiddo says she doesn't like that one because it "tastes like ants". how does she conclude this?!

@futurebird I grew up in their range; green ants are a source of food and medicine among first nations people, though this does nothing to disabuse my notion that most āpeasant delicaciesā are a consequence of āthe chap with the sword gets the cheeseburgerā
