the fediverse is so White that everyone assumes everyone (without a clear photo of themselves) is White, which leads sometimes to weird tone policing that partially explains why so many non-White people check this place out and bounce

I made a "Black" joke once and some woman *demanded* I explain myself. I did not. Because 1) I identified as Black in my profile and 2) it was funny as hell to get lectured by a White woman about a Black joke.

The most dangerous aspect of Mastodon in particular is how holier-than-thou everyone is.I've been a moderator on three different instances for a few years now. I've seen heinous things and heinous people. (I'll leave it at that.) And it never ceases to surprise me how petty regular users can be with each other over wanting to use the nuclear option for a difference of opinion, or because they got into an argument.

You can't expect to create an environment that is welcoming to different kinds of people if your immediate response to any kind of friction is to rescind that welcome and put up a wall.Again: There are clear cases of people engaging in purposefully anti-social or even illegal activity that don't require a drawn-out discussion before responding. And then there are people who have a different worldview than you. People who, 9 out of 10 times, you would rely on as an ally. And so many of you are too scared or lazy to talk out those differences and trying to understand the other. Some of you can't even be bothered to read a person's profile before you make a first and final judgement about them. You are the moral authority. If they don't believe exactly as you about everything, they are a heathen and a thug and should be excommunicated.People get sick of that shit.

Sometimes I wonder whether masto/fedi is growing or atrophying. It's genuinely hard to tell. But I do know that one of the most commonly cited reasons for why people leave this space is because of how they feel like they are constantly being judged. Like how one badthink or badspeech can somehow get them in trouble. Or how gleeful some users are to wag their fingers at you and apply an undergrad sociological label to you.I say to you: People get sick of that shit.People join social media for connection. Masto provides instead a goddamned minefield of judgement. And if that's the kind of place you want this space to be, so be it. I'm not here to tell you how to run things.I can tell you, however, you don't need to keep asking where all the diversity is. Diversity inherently means a degree of difference. Different people come here, but they're always a little *too* different, and you all push them out.
