@nobody I hate myself for saying this, but uhh we need to make governments host national Fediverse instances. That's probably the quickest way to stop this shit flood and cool peoples' heads, so we can focus on making the next thing actually suck a little less#monett #bluesky #blacksky #x #twitter #ssb #nostr #eu #digitalsovereignty

@nobodyIs there any government in the world right now, you trust enough to do it right and with your benefits in mind? From my point of view, when it comes to make the fediverse more popular, we're sadly on our own.

@gobsmacked there's no trust involved, I just want these people hearing about "sovereignty" for the first time because Trump to become aware that there are existing solutions which also win given the extra considerations that are not obvious to non tech people (specifically bootstrapability and foss stuff). That they will give their data to the insane French government instead of insane Zuckerberg is honestly a no-op for my person

⬆️ @nobody>> we need to make governments host national #Fediverse instances…Cool idea, but #Mastodon is broken because of its flawed #block feature.Already some very high profile accounts with large numbers of followers are abusing this feature. But imagine if millions of accounts start following a "national" account, it becomes so easy for the government to block some account and thereby deprive its own millions of followers from the blocked account.Mastodon blocking is badly fucked up.

@rameshgupta I think you're talking about instance-level blocking, which yes it sucks, but it's _good-enough_ for now

⬆️ @nobody>>>> imagine if millions of accounts start following a national account, it becomes so easy for the government owning that to block another account and thereby deprive its own millions of followers from the blocked account.>> I think you're talking about instance-level blocking…My understanding is that if a user blocks another, then followers of the first user no longer see posts from the second user unless they follow the second one too.Blocking is transitive at account level.

@rameshgupta I have not heard of any implementation doing that (although I'd not be too surprised to see mastodon specifically to come up with slop like that)

@nobodyValid argument. Better to give data to the people who want to cause less harm. Yet I'd say it's still the better way to give it to people who don't want to harm at all and make it so vastly decentralized, that compromising one instance has next to no effect, cause there's another clean one just waiting around the corner. We should always strive for the best option, instead of the less worse option.
