Is bandwagon.fm worth one’s time? Anyone have an opinion one way or another? It seems cool but also yet another platform to host music 😅 #indiemusic #fediverse #bandcamp #faircamp

@kidlightbulbs I’ll say “yes” but I’m definitely biased. :)Yes, it’s “yet another music site” but you can sell your music with your own strip account and it is self-hostable (if you’re into that) And, I just released migration tools to let you take your whole profile and network to any other bandwagon server. So, you can sign up on bandwagon.fm but you’ll never be locked into it. 🤘🏻Correct me, but I don’t think any other platform makes that guarantee.

@benpate > you can sell your music with your own strip account and it is self-hostable... and the most exciting feature from my POV, BandWagon profiles can be found and followed in the fediverse (eg @brickwallunlimited).@kidlightbulbs

@kidlightbulbs > I actually added bandwagon support a week or two agoAwesome, I've corrected my comment on the forum to reflect that.Maybe the tech BandWagon uses to make federated profiles could be adopted by Ampwall, Ko-Fi and Buy Me A Coffee, so their artist profiles could come up in Unstream searches? I've been meaning to reach out to the Ampwall folks about joining TSMN forum. Wouldn't hurt to hit up micropatronage platforms too, since a lot of musicians use them.

@strypey nice, I’m talking to the ampwall guys now about some options to integrate more deeply. Ko-fi and BMC are on my list as well. What other patronage platforms are on your radar?I suspect the majority of music that people will search for are major artists, and therefore Bandcamp & Qobuz & official sites will overwhelmingly be the platforms that get clicked on most. I’m keen to not boil the ocean and offer too many options

@kidlightbulbs> What other patronage platforms are on your radar?Liberapay, for one. I'd have to dig into my notes, but I think there are one or two others. @fedipay is a new project just starting out.> I’m keen to not boil the ocean and offer too many optionsFair. This is why I'm bullish on standardising protocols, rather than services having to form bilateral relations with each other to achieve interop. An FEP on federation for music platforms could be useful;https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/a4ed/fep-a4ed.md

@strypey yeah, I hear you. I just suspect it will be hard to get cooperation there; for me it's more about having *enough* but not too many options. Most artists have presence on many of these sites, so at least 1 place to support an artist is better than noneand good call on liberapay! I have one myself but haven't seen many musicians on there. will look into it

@kidlightbulbs> I just suspect it will be hard to get cooperation thereIt's a collective action problem, for sure. Which is why I'm so focused on getting platform devs to join TSMN forum, and getting them excited by the various ways converging on standard protocols can improve their effort-to-reach ratio.Imagine every fediverse service was using a bespoke social media API and their maintainers had to form bilateral relations to make even basic federation work ...
