@effariwhy Huh, migrating *to* the forkiverse from another service is a new one on me. What motivated that?

(1/2)@ikuturso> a program that would provide funding to support some types of organizations setting up their own fedi instancesYes! There is so much low-hanging fruit here. Take newsrooms, for example. They don't necessarily need anything as resource-heavy as a Mastodon server. Most of them already publish RSS, showing them how to use existing tools to also publish an AP feed would make much more quality content followable.@hpod16

#Listening to Umami (Single) by@brickwallunlimited from 2024;https://bandwagon.fm/67d9bb3e5f1aeb12faa08832I was sceptical at first, unwelcome echoes of my own halting experiments with Fruity Loops on Windows 98, but this track grew on me as it evolved. It's a playful piece, and much more sophisticated in its execution that it initially seems.#music #electronica #BrickwallUnlimitedInc

One thing that doesn't sit right with me about Stranger Things season 5, Hopper andd the gang seems to have become very cavalier about killing people. No hesitation, no obvious remorse, no planning to avoid the need.It kind of reminds me of the scenes the family of the Dr Evil henchmen killed by in Austin Powers. Except that in Stranger Things our heroes completely lack the awareness that grunts are people with families that even Austin Powers manages to have, as a movie.#TV #StrangerThings

UK Labour PM Sir Keir Stammer is almost indistinguishable from UK Conservative PM John Major, who held the office after TINA Thatcher, and before the technocrat international war criminal Tony Blair.https://newsthump.com/2026/01/26/boring-man-terrified-by-slightly-less-boring-man/

#Listening to Slap on the Wrist by Aotearoa ska-punks Roofdog, a band I've had many a wild skank to over the years;"When will you let me out of here?I need a joint, I need a beerWhen will you let me out of here? For your cannabis laws I just don't care"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k0bq8lG0V8Love the little dub breakdown at the end, the self-titled album this track comes from has a few examples of this stuff.#music #punk #ska #Roofdog #cannabis

#Listening to Sweet Candy Powerby Shonen Knife, released in 2025;https://shonenknife.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-candy-power-2I first heard this Japanese punk band in the late 1990s, care of a friend who was obsessed with all things Japan. But BC tells me they've been a band since 1981. They still got it.#music #punk #Japan #ShonenKnife

@kidlightbulbs> Unstream ... Useful if you often listen on YouTube Music, Soundcloud and the like but want to directly support music and reduce your dependence on streamingThanks so much for creating #Unstream, this is exactly the kind of music search portal I've been looking for years!https://the.socialmusic.network/t/discoverability-on-the-fediverse-and-thought-dump/544/33If you're not already there, it would be great to have your participation on the Social Music Network forum. Which is where I discovered Unstream;https://the.socialmusic.network/t/unstream-a-search-engine-for-alternative-platforms/

@benpate > you can sell your music with your own strip account and it is self-hostable... and the most exciting feature from my POV, BandWagon profiles can be found and followed in the fediverse (eg @brickwallunlimited).@kidlightbulbs

(1/2)"A cool thing is that this is quite affordable — about $92/year. It would be almost free if I wasn’t paying Buttondown to handle the email-newsletter part (there are open-source alternatives here that I haven’t looked into yet)."@kidlightbulbs, 2025https://bgreen.lol/i-built-my-own-diy-patreonAfter setting up a Ghost instance last year for Disintermedia.net.nz, I learned that the bottleneck you're paying to get through here is the spamcatchers at the major email hosts.#email #EmailsNewsletters

#Listening to @kidlightbulbs' 2025 album INFINITE NORMAL;https://music.kidlightbulbs.com/infinite-normal/An intriguing singer-songwriter album reminiscent of Sparklehorse, Badly Drawn Boy or SJD. Melancholic and frustrated melodies, and lush instrumentation, especially for a solo act (plus a few friends).Great to see professional sounding artists making use of non-corporate music hosting tools like FairCamp (see link) and @bandwagon (click on the Kid's @handle to see his BW profile).#music #indie #KidLightbulbs

@craiglambie42 > I am working on @fedipay for the exact reasons of avoiding stripe and multiple subscriptionsGreat stuff. I assume you've followed the Kalashnikov Principle and looked into the history of previous efforts, like SubClub?https://wedistribute.org/2024/09/subclub-paid-subscriptions/https://www.theverge.com/2024/12/16/24322574/sub-club-mastodon-mammoth-fediverse-shutting-downhttps://video.fedihost.co/w/sepHP71Tgk521g8Xn9BSryWhere does FediPay sit in the digital payments stack?#FediPay #SubClub@lightweight

#RIP Flattr, as of 2023;https://flattr.com/These folks were way ahead of their time. #TIL that podcastindex.org has its own fediverse service at;https://podcastindex.social/Also, you can find and follow podcasts from their index from your fediverse app. Put this into the search bar to get a sense of the volume of new hotness this adds to the fediverse.@ap.podcastindex.orgThe only thing that would improve this is naming the podcast actors @NameOfPodcast, rather than a string of numbers.@podcastindex.social#podcasting #PodcastIndex

Hmm. What do folks think about 'ground hosting' as a way of describing community-hosting by contrasting it with 'cloud hosting'. Getting our online services out of the clouds, and back on the ground, under the control of the communities using them.#GroundHosting

Anyone feel like setting up a simple static webpage at a domain like;https://MakeItAProtocol.netLaying out the case for making new online services as protocols not platforms, in as ideologically neutral a way as possible. Maybe with subsections targeting different political economic lenses; reasons to Make It A Protocol if you're a socialist/ libertarian/ liberal/ etc. @mmasnick's Protocols Not Platforms is good, but tends to rub some socialists the wrong way for some reason.

Can't help but notice that sparrows seem to be getting much more brazen about coming inside buildings to hunt for food. I've been noticing this in various parts of Aotearoa over the last month or 2. Is it just me?If not, I wonder what environmental change might have promoted this change in behaviour? Have the conditions been particularly good for sparrow breeding over the last few months? Are their normal outdoor food supplies being reduced somehow?#wildlife #NatureObservations
