Universities 2:As Mark Tupper points out (on LinkedIn), the staff retention crisis in UK universities (compounding issues noted in my previous post) is not a well-being or a staff management issue, its more structural;cuts to staffing have intensified the teaching demands (both in hours & the range of subjects - often outside the specialisms - they're being required to teach) while also expanding administration, leading to a dysfunctional churn of academic staff #universities #workers

@ChrisMayLA6 Hmm... interesting. I wonder if the UK universities would consider hiring teachers, paid by the hour? That way, they would get the teaching done, and then would have no cost for the rest of the year.

@h4890 they already do, but this has led a to a range of problems, not least dissatisfaction among the hired staff about two tier employment (seeing their working conditions as significantly worse than 'established' academics) but all drawn from the same pool of people who have completed a PhD (or in the case of some first year teaching, those who are undertaking a PhD)

@ChrisMayLA6 Ahh... yes, I understand if the pool consists of second tier academics. Maybe the key here is to expand the pool. Then you'd have academics with some sense of job security and a regular salary, and the consulting pool who are not employees and have no job security. Then I think the pool of academics would not be so envious of the consulting pool, alternatively, they could work extra.

@h4890 Again, this is already sort of the case with the 'consulting pool' often presented with the model that the hourly paid work is a right of passage to the preferred group - the issue is that 'pipeline' has broken down leaving the hourly paid not just envious but angry about career related deception

@ChrisMayLA6 Hmm... interesting. I think this is worth a google or two, to see if any school is open to remote teachers from northern europe.
