@nytpu hmm but arboricultural charcoal is net-zero carbon right? all the carbon you burn was captured from the air when the trees were growing, and the trees grew within your lifetimemeanwhile Dwarf Fortress dwarves pulling coal out of the earth are using carbon from the trees that fell into a swamp geological time ago... so arguably even older than the old-growth forests on the surface

@nytpu well yeah, it's not like people enjoyed hanging out in a coal deposit and now it's missing from their life because some greedy dwarves mined it out.Noone's gonna mind the coal disappearing from the ground.Until you get sinkholes, that is :P

@wolf480pl @nytpu Presumably one could just fill up the emptied space with sand or something.

@lispi314 @nytpu Sometimes parts of the mine that are still in use cave in due to an accident, and that can still cause issues on the surface. But yeah, unused areas can probably be filled - if you search for "deep mine backfilling" you'll find some companies selling devices to make that more efficient.Though it still probably is quite costly, and even more costly with dwarven technology.1/

@lispi314 @nytpu Also, where do you get the material from? Sand would have to be mined on the surface, and good sand can be quite useful for glass & concrete... though I guess dwarves might not have that so easier for them.Ideally it'd be some inert waste but idk if eg. slag would be any good. Also, obligatory Practical Engineering https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZg1zOKm5wk
