@boilingsteam It won't be $1000 unless absolutely forced, if so what will happen is that valve will move to ARM sooner to cheapen the costs.

@PalePimp They won't have anything ready with ARM64 anytime soon, though. So this first iteration will be x86_64.

@boilingsteam Obiously I meant the next version if the current x86 iteration is too expensive to sell afordably they will not manufacture many of them, they will still use this generation as a new iteration of SteamOS and jump to ARM for the next gen.

@PalePimp ARM64 is not very economical though. If you rely on integrated GPUs there is nothing right now to rival AMD or Nvidia, and if they don't, it means they have to include a discrete GPU from either Nvidia or AMD which will cost more.

@boilingsteam ARM is not a product but a specification, there's nothing preventing you from incorporating a PCI-e bus and adding a regular GPU to any custom board, proof is the myriad of people driving AMD GPUs with Pi boards. The key to ARM being cheap is that you can make your own tailor made-design and approach many more CPU firms than just AMD/Intel. (Chi..., cough, cough)And the biggest problem with ARM graphics traditionally has always been the drivers being closed source, something that Valve will not want/tolerate, the Steam Frame has my utmost attention because of this. Most boards like the popular Pi's have shitty drivers, some of them closed, really bad upstream kernel support, etc.

@PalePimp Sure, you can make your own ARM-based processors, but that's not the issue I referred to. Making a cheap ARM hardware with integrated Mali GPU for example is one thing, making something that performs as well as an AMD APU is a totally different problem. And I would be very curious to see if they can make something powerful AND cheaper than what AMD already provides. The Steam Frame has weak hardware (the Snapdragon chip 3D capabilities are not great) so that's hardly a reference.

It's a shame that Nvidia's NV-1 and AMD's Soundwave ARM APUs haven't gotten off the ground yet. Qualcomm's exclusivity deal with Microsoft regarding Windows on ARM has done catastrophic damage towards ARM adoption. It's especially embarrassing that the best way to play older DX11 games using Windows on ARM is using an Apple silicon chip using a Paralleles virtual machine.
