Oh, and soil is of utmost importance. Different plants want different parameters too, especially drainage and water retention. Be generous with perlite and vermiculite if your soil isn't already "well draining" and "water retaining" ...at the same time, which is odd to think about. The asymptotic optimal potting soil for most things seems to be 33% perlite, 33% vermiculite, and 33% compost. Obviously there's a cost-productivity-landarea tradeoff when planting into the ground on your homestead vs into pots on your rooftop terrace.
