We're thinking of the same roads, I think. Heckin' gorgeous. We ended up way far down some tiny side road well after dark when we decided to pitch camp; ended up being in some farm's yard. No light at all at night, so I think nobody was there, but we GTFO'd hard at daybreak when we realised what we did.

We did that on the most miserable night on the way back on the grapevine or therabouts! Set camp on gravel around an oil well. It was horrible and freezing.
