It's just a shit situation, no way around it.The world is stretched between China, Russia, and America. China has economy, Russia has military, America has both. Europe has neither, so we're gonna have to hold our noses and be friends with someone.America has been a good partner for a very long time, but they've backed themselves into a financial corner and as a result, they're becoming increasingly kleptocratic. Trump is endemic of larger structural issues with the US.Russia is the most sneaky back-stabby country on the planet, and has been for at least the past 100 years. Aligning with them is just suicidal.China has steady leadership, and can make for a great friend. But European politicians will be tempted to take their money in order to plug whatever hole in the budget is most urgent at the moment. The problem is that once China has put their money into something, they will consider it theirs and that it should be run the way they run things - and China does not share European values.Even so, the two major military powers are America and Russia, making it a very dangerous world for anyone without the ability to strike back. Realistically speaking, we ought to just prepare ourselves for a reality where the US rules the western hemisphere and Russia rules the Orthodox Christian world. There's just nobody on earth with the power and the will to prevent it.The EU also needs to reform. Strength in unity is the only reason why we're treated better than Tunisia or Guatemala. We can't afford to let the EU be about things like Refugee Justice or bottle cap regulation, because topics like these are controversial enough that they create fodder for EuroSkeptic politicians - who will be lavishly supported by the US and Russia, because they both want to see the EU gone. The EU must be defended at all costs, and it must do one thing and one thing only - keep us from becoming lunch. That said, the EU does actually have an economic edge. While the US is the world's most powerful economy, it is also extremely dysfunctional. A lot of high skill / high tech activities are just better accomplished in Europe. However, European countries also need to reform themselves to be more business friendly. Reducing taxes and regulation while maintaining the world-famous European quality of life is obviously an incredibly tricky balancing act - but the potential payoff is immense.Trump is not going to be the last "Trump" that America elects, and Ukraine is not going to be the last country that Russia invades. But as the US becomes more chaotic, there is an opportunity for Europe to become a new capital for business and knowledge-work.
