       So my dad, who is a musty old conservative, but like, not in a stupid way, says he thinks the only way out of our current political mess is a civil war, most likely with ~100,000 dead. So, uh, that's fun. :/

       @Angle@anticapitalist.party imo future civil war is baked into the system, poor states with hardly any people still get 2 senate votes just like massive rich states with huge populations. only way to change is by changing constitution, and those states with hardly any people will never agree.

       @LovesTha@floss.social @Angle@anticapitalist.party bicameral systems are meant to be a handbrake on progess so in usa is serving exactly as intended. and is absolutely the problem and why you see illogical outcomes like megacorps getting huge subsidies for their pig farms and cornfield monocultures

       CC: @Angle@anticapitalist.partyyes I agree the number is too small in usa, currently just reinforces the duopoly. eg in australia its something like 7 senators per state, so minor parties like greens end up having a say, unlike in the lower house where (even with preferential voting) its pretty much always one of two parties and everyone else is window dressing. fun fact the only time in australia there was ever a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gases was due to the extremely rare event of 'hung parliament' where neither big party had majority.
